and gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical and compositional issues
surrounding computer music. This intense full-time program introduces the
concepts of computer-assisted composition, signal processing, sound synthesis,
and writing for interaction. Seminars by guest composers accompany technical
courses taught from a compositional point of view. The year ends with the creation of a study for
a solo instrument and electronics performed during a workshop with music
professionals. Upon completion of the first year of the
Cursus program, students will have acquired the foundation necessary to have a
clear vision of the field, to continue his/her own training independently and
assess the systems necessary to realize their artistic projects.

Rossum feature composers at Festival November Music
Prick up your ears and embrace the silence
Embracing the silence and listening with concentration. Music by Dutch composers Peter Adriaansz and Piet-Jan van Rossum will feature at upcoming November Music Festival in ’s-Hertogenbosch.
It is an annual festival for contemporary music, for music that is only just fresh off the press. November Music takes pride in presenting premieres every year. This year the festival even features two Dutch composers who will both bring along brand-new works. Peter Adriaansz and Piet-Jan van Rossum have a lot in common, but at the same time they are completely different. “What I share with Peter is a great dedication,” says Piet-Jan van Rossum. “We are both highly ambitious and believe unconditionally in what we are doing, for the sake of music, both for the individual as for society and civilisation as a whole. Great words, but as true as can be.”

Third prize winner Queen Elisabeth Music Competition 2010, Brussels
In May 2010 Dutch pianist Hannes Minnaar (1984) won the third prize in the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels, the highest award ever received by a Dutch pianist at this prominent music competition. Last year he completed his piano studies with Jan Wijn at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, graduating with distinction. Master classes by Willem Brons, Pascal Devoyon, Menahem Pressler and Ferenc Rados have also contributed to his excellent playing.
Winning third prize in the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition has its consequences. ‘The result I achieved there opens many doors.
Hannes Minnaar will perform at the Classical Music Day in the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ / Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Monday 11 October 2010.

RUHR 2010
In 2010 the Ruhr is one of the three cultural capitals of Europe. Dutch artists are involved in more than a hundred RUHR.2010 projects, making the Netherlands the principal partner country. The most remarkable classical and contemporary music collaboration is the Holland Panorama in Dortmund.
The Holland Panorama takes place in October and November 2010 and was organised by Music Center the Netherlands in collaboration with Jac van Steen, the Dutch-born ‘Generalmusikdirektor’ of the city of Dortmund. For his farewell as chief conductor from the Musikkollegium Winterthur, van Steen already organised a festival under the same name in 2008: ‘I like to promote good Dutch music whenever possible.’
The aim of this initiative is to show the German audience a slice of Dutch music life. Read more>>

Author:Joep Stapel The Arnhem Mahler String Orchestra
In the United States it has already been a familiar phenomenon for decades: the community orchestra. This is an orchestra consisting of accomplished amateurs and professional musicians that are not active in their field, offering them the experience of playing in a large symphony orchestra. Although the Arnhem Symphony Orchestra of the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra is not a regular orchestra, it is becoming a recurring event. Almost every year since 2006, the department for education has organised an opportunity for experienced amateur musicians to perform in concert. In December 2010 the Arnhem Mahler String Orchestra will give a performance in De Vereeniging in Nijmegen. As many as a hundred amateur musicians will rehearse for one day with a number of professional musicians from the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra. One week later they will give an animated performance under one of the musicians from the orchestra. This time round they will play the Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, conducted by the oboist of the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, Arthur Mahler (no relation).
The Arnhem Mahler String Orchestra: rehearsal 11 December, performance 18 December. Applications can be submitted until 15 October 2010. For more information click here.

On Wednesday 1 September Made in Holland: showcase early music took place. It was organised by MCN in collaboration with the Utrecht Early Music Festival. Five Dutch early music ensembles showed how diverse the early music practice is and how well it fits into every type of music programme. Afterwards the visitors could attend the evening concert by the Holland Baroque Society. To accompany this
showcase a programme book was produced, offering portraits of the performing
ensembles as well as a listing of early music ensembles in the Netherlands. The
programme book with the listing of ensembles can be downloaded here

Marko Nikodijevic winner of
Gaudeamus Music Week After a splendid concert by VocaalLAB in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam, head of MCN's contemporary music department Henk Heuvelmans presented the Gaudeamus Prize to Marko Nikodijevic (Serbia/Germany, 1980) for his orchestral work cvetic, kucica…/la lugubre gondola. The prize money of € 4550 is the commission for a new composition which will be performed at next year’s Music Week. The panel of judges (Donnacha Dennehy, Helena Tulve and Willem Jeths) praised the personal and mature tone of the piece that is based on the piano work La lugubre gondola by Liszt. The Italian Giuliano Bracci (1980) received an Honourable Mention for his orchestral work Da una spazio bianco and so did the Armenian Artur Akshelyan (1984) for Lichtfarben for violin and ensemble.
The award ceremony crowned an extremely varied week, packed with music by 83 composers from 35 countries. Heuvelmans mentioned that the atmosphere between the panel of judges and composers was excellent, that nobody had been split into different camps and ‘no scores had been burnt’. He was rightly satisfied, because if last week proved one thing, it is that contemporary music is alive and kicking. Despite the growing disregard by politicians and the media, the festival attracted a great deal of interest from the audience.

On 17 September Theo Loevendie turned 80. An honourable age that is at odds with the ever youthful vitality of his music. That should not come as a surprise: Loevendie has always maintained the childlike curiosity for music which, when he was a little boy, made him follow bands all through town. When at the age of 25 he went to the conservatory to study the clarinet and composition, he had already made his mark in jazz music, but inquisitiveness remained his main drive. ‘The classics, jazz, contemporary music, everything was equally exotic when I got to know it, because I was not brought up with it,’ Loevendie writes on his website. ‘But it didn’t stop there. After jazz, it was easy to make musical contact with music from other cultures, at first Africa, then Turkish and Arabic music, India, Japan, Indonesia etc.’ With his colourful Ensemble Ziggurat, founded in 2003, as well as in his compositions he is, to this very day, a completely individual and original voice in the international music world. A voice that celebrates and embraces the colourfulness of this very music world, a voice which will no doubt turn this colourfulness into exceptionally brilliant sounds in his new opera about the Dutch philosopher Spinoza that will be premiered in 2012.

Mayke Nas recently received the artist grant of the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD), a prestigious exchange endowment, allowing her to work for a year in Berlin.
Great names in musical history have preceded her: Stravinsky, Cage, Feldman, Riley, Xenakis, Nono all worked upon invitation of DAAD for a year during their life in Berlin. This is the second time in history that this grant has been awarded to a composer in the Netherlands. Moreover Mayke Nas is the first Dutch composer to receive this distinction since Louis Andriessen (who resided there in 1964).

Martijn Padding: Three Concerti The title of the latest
CD in the series Dutch Composers with works by Martijn Padding (b. 1956), Three
Concerti, would almost put you on the wrong track. What does it mean by
concerti? Concerti by a composer who is recognised as continuing in the
tradition of The Hague School of Louis Andriessen and his colleagues? What does not come as a surprise, is the complete openness the works convey, a constant element in Padding’s oeuvre. The soloists are Martine Sikkenk (mandolin), Dirk Luijmes (harmonium) and Heleen Hulst (violin) respectively. They are accompanied by ASKO|Schönberg, conducted by Etienne Siebens. * Et’cetera KTC 1406

Beyond entertainment: why music matters At the end of the lecture ‘Beyond entertainment: why music matters’, which English philosopher Roger Scruton gave in Nijmegen on 11 June 2009, the traditionalist (‘a man of position’ as Maartje Somers once called him) highly praised Aap verslaat knekelgeest (Monkey defeats the Skeleton Ghost) by Peter Schat. However, he had one reservation: according to him, the melodic figures are ‘remarkably short of breath too’. Likewise, he once described modern society as a whole in similar words in an interview: ‘fast changes, fast satisfaction of needs and an aversion to complexity’. These are qualities which, according to him, are at odds ‘with the values that are necessary for understanding high culture’ (in: NRC Handelsblad, 23 May 2008).

Threadgill: No Compromise Although Henry Threadgill's music
can often be extremely entertaining, he dislikes the word entertainment. And
while many of his musical compositions leave a lot of room for individual
interpretation, in fact they demand it, he categorically rejects compromise.
Few composers in any genre have been as clear and articulate about precisely
what they want, and yet surprise is a fundamental component to Threadgill's
aesthetic and it impacts the musicians he works with as well as the audience. and the debut of its new Ring are trickling in; all are in agreement
that, musically, this Rheingold was a success, thanks to James
Levine’s return to the fold. The singers also get high marks, although some
thought Bryn Terfel’s Wotan was “petulant” and “tentative.” This writer found
him somewhat disengaged, although in fine voice. I confess to being distracted
by that ugly mass of hair in his blind eye—perhaps he was, too. As to Robert Lepage’s Big Deal
production (known inside the house as "The Machine"), the crits are
hedging their bets, especially since technical glitches on opening night
prevented the unveiling of the reportedly spectacular bridge to the family
homestead. Valhalla, it turns out, was stuck in a computer, unable to make its debut
for safety reasons, we are told.
EMI Classics Names New VP of A&R Guy Hands and his private equity
firm, Terra Firma, continue to pursue Citigroup in court over what Hands claims
was “misleading” advice about his purchase of the struggling EMI Music Group in
2007. But the beleaguered recording division carries on, and its latest
announcement is the appointment of Andrew Cornall as vice president of A&R
for EMI Classics. Cornall since 2004 has been the
executive director of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, credited with bringing
it back to life after some rather moribund years. Prior to the RLPO, Cornall
was for 25 years in the recording business, lastly as senior executive producer
of the Decca Music Group. Among other accolades, he earned a Grammy award in 1994
as classical producer of the year. He was also responsible for the relaunch in
the early ‘90s of the Argo label, which helped raise the profile of new

Domingo writes, "I think it is time for the company to go in new
directions, including studying the possibility of a merger with the Kennedy
Center." The opera has struggled financially in recent years as a stand-alone

not seem coincidental, the New York Philharmonic has said that Zarin Mehta will
step down as President and Executive Director of the orchestra when his
contract expires, on Aug. 31, 2012, after 12 years at the helm. Last Friday, the orchestra announced
that its upcoming trip to the Republic of Georgia had been cancelled. Mehta
expressed anger and dismay publicly, citing a loss of hundreds of thousands of
dollars to the orchestra, which is some $5 million in debt. As it turns out,
there was no signed contract with the Georgian Ministry of Culture. News of
Mehta’s departure arrives one working day after that fiasco and on the same day
as opening night of the Metropolitan Opera’s season, which is probably Lincoln
Center’s biggest day of the year. An odd time to issue
important news from another of its high-profile constituents. New Artist of the Month: Massimo La Rosa CLEVELAND – Massimo La Rosa has
journeyed far since he was a 10-year-old trombonist in the community band in
his hometown near Sicily, just outside Palermo. A decade later, he joined the
orchestra at the renowned Teatro La Fenice in Venice, becoming principal
trombone in his third season. But sitting in the pit of the
restored opera house where many historic works had their premieres, including
Verdi’s La Traviata in 1853, La Rosa dreamed of moving on to a major
symphony orchestra, ideally in the United States. In 2007, he achieved his
goal: he was appointed principal trombone of the Cleveland Orchestra, in which
he has distinguished himself as a musician of impeccable taste and remarkable
facility. Those qualities can be heard on his first solo recording, Cantando,
a self-produced disc that has just been released. There is so much mad in choreographer Faye Driscoll From the "Torn Tutu" by

zophtic and looked under Amanda K. Ringger’s acid-colored lighting a bit like a
Robert Crumb cartoon drawing. As the duet evolved in silence, Helland

squealed with pleasure as he held her throat. This frolic grew, like a glacial
creep, disturbing. Musical America is helping presenters
