The magazine Newsweek released the list of the best specialized hospitals in the world, and the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) of Unicamp appears in the ranking with two specialties. The list includes 23 Brazilian hospitals, and HC is the only representative from the interior of São Paulo. The Endocrinology area appears in 97th place among the 150 best in the world and in 3rd place among national hospitals, and the Pediatrics area appears in 151st place among the 250 best in the world and in 7th place among the best in Brazil.
“It is very significant for the hospital to have two medical specialties recognized by a prestigious international journal such as Newsweek. This demonstrates the quality and excellence in the care provided to SUS patients, the respect and recognition of the serious and innovative work we do at HC. We hope that other specialties at our hospital will soon also be included in this ranking”, says Elaine Cristina de Ataíde, superintendent of HC.
The ranking included the 300 best hospitals in the specialties of cardiology and oncology, the 250 best in pediatrics, the 150 best in cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, orthopedics and pulmonology, the 125 best in neurology, neurosurgery and urology and the 100 best in gynecology and obstetrics. The rankings are based on recommendations from physicians, patient and family satisfaction surveys and performance indicators. The work is done in partnership with Statista Inc., a global market research and consumer data company.

Endocrinology
According to physician Denise Engelbrecht Zantut Wittmann, head of the HC Endocrinology service and professor of the subject at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp, the HC Endocrinology service serves around a thousand medium and high complexity patients per month and maintains partnerships with other areas, such as pediatrics, gynecology, pathological anatomy, radiology, nuclear medicine, head and neck surgery, otorhinolaryngology and neurosurgery.
“We are a lean service. Our difference lies in our partnerships and multidisciplinarity. Our team is engaged in conducting research, supervising postgraduate students and resident doctors in their final course work, and participating in internships and national and international conferences. We go out of our way to provide the best possible care for our patients,” explains Wittmann.
The Endocrinology service at HC da Unicamp maintains specialized outpatient clinics for treating patients with thyroid cancer, type I and II diabetes, type I diabetes using an insulin pump, obesity, thyroid nodules, ultrasound-guided puncture of nodules and alcoholization of thyroid cysts, thyroid dysfunction and neuroendocrinology, in addition to performing dynamic tests for the diagnosis of endocrine diseases.
“Recently, the diabetic foot care and diabetes education service was reestablished, and a service for care for patients with calcium disorders was created. In addition, in partnership with Pediatrics, resident physicians participate in pediatric endocrinology and sex differentiation disorders services, and, with Gynecology, they work in the gynecological endocrinology service, among others,” says Wittmann.
Pediatrics
For Sérgio Tadeu Martins Marba, full professor in the area of Neonatology and head of the Department of Pediatrics at FCM at Unicamp, it is very important to recognize the work offered, for the second consecutive year, according to the classification of Newsweek.
“The Pediatrics department seeks to remain cohesive in the pursuit of excellence in the care of our patients, combined with the quality training of human resources and the continuous requalification of active professionals”, says Marba.
In addition to its work at HC Unicamp, Pediatrics also works in the area of Neonatology at the Hospital da Mulher professor Doutor José Aristodemo Pinotti – Caism Unicamp, with national and international recognition, and in extra-mural activities in agreements signed with Basic Units in the city of Campinas, with the Pronto Atendimento Metropolitano Campinas and with the Boldrini, Sumaré State and Paulínia Municipal hospitals.
According to Marba, the Pediatrics department plays an important role in training researchers and professors, through its work in the postgraduate program in Child and Adolescent Health at FCM, at the Pediatric Research Center (Ciped) and at other centers. More recently, different professionals from the department have participated in teleconsultations, telematriculation and other digital activities, developing new tools for qualifying health professionals working outside the University.
“We hope that the positivity generated by this recognition will lead us to new perspectives for improving pediatric care, integrated with quality assistance that will allow for excellent teaching and knowledge production,” concludes Marba.
Pediatric Endocrinology
Pediatric endocrinology is an area of expertise that requires the interaction of pediatric and endocrinological knowledge for the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders from the neonatal period to the end of adolescence. Such hormonal changes affect growth, development and metabolism, and therefore the specific aspects of each phase of development must be considered.
For pediatric endocrinologist Gil Guerra Júnior, the success and ranking of the Pediatrics and Endocrinology areas at HC are due to the quality clinical service provided by professors, doctors, resident doctors and nurses who work at the hospital.
“As we are a teaching hospital within a public university, our patients understand how dedicated we are to them, not only through care, but through teaching and research, which are also fundamental to the quality of this care”, highlights Guerra Júnior.
Unicamp’s HC is a reference in pediatric endocrinology for sex differentiation, precocious puberty and growth disorders, in addition to being one of the references in the state of São Paulo for neonatal screening. “This alone indicates the quality of our care,” adds the Unicamp pediatric endocrinologist.
