The Vice-Rector of Undergraduate Studies, Ivan Toro, presented, at the meeting of the University Council (Consu) this Tuesday (3), the proposal to create new courses at Unicamp. According to Toro, the Vice-Rectory of Undergraduate Studies (PRG) has 12 proposals for new courses, but, for infrastructure reasons, the body decided to give priority to five of them – Qualification in English, Physiotherapy, History (evening), Pharmacy (evening) and Law.

The proposal will still be evaluated by a special committee to be installed by the Rector's Office in 2025. If the committee's opinion is favorable, the proposal will go to Consu for deliberation. In addition to the five new courses, PRG intends to implement the Bachelor's Degree in Night Theater - which was authorized by Consu in 2019, but is not yet being offered.

Ivan Toro argues that, among the three public state universities in São Paulo, Unicamp is the one that offers the fewest courses. There are 69 courses at Unicamp, compared to 183 at the University of São Paulo (USP) and 136 at the São Paulo State University (Unesp). It is also the one that offers the fewest number of places for students: 3.340. USP has 11.147 places, and Unesp has 7.680.

The creation of the courses Agricultural Engineering Night (Faculty of Agricultural Engineering), Bioprocesses (Faculty of Food Engineering), Biotechnology (Institute of Biology-IB), Biomedicine (IB), Philosophy Night (Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences-IFCH), Medicine (Faculty of Dentistry of Piracicaba) and Data Science (Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing) are still under analysis by the PRG.

Check out the new course proposals:

- Bachelor's Degree in English, with 30 vacancies and the hiring of 11 new teachers for the staff of the Institute of Language Studies (Institute of Language Studies) and the Language Teaching Center (CEL).

- Physiotherapy, with a proposal for 40 vacancies and staggered hiring of 14 teachers. According to the report, the project to create the course has already been approved, but was not taken forward due to the lack of resources.

- History at night, with 45 vacancies and staggered hiring of 10 new teachers over two years for the IFCH staff.

- Nighttime pharmacy, with 32 vacancies for students and the hiring of five more teachers for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FCF).

- Law, with a proposal to offer 50 daytime vacancies and signal another 50 nighttime vacancies, and to hire 35 teachers over five years. The location where the course would be offered has not yet been defined. The WG argues that less than 5% of Law courses in the country are offered by public universities and, in the state of São Paulo, only 1,12% of them are in public institutions.

DOI-Codi Memorial

The final report of the Working Group (GT) that analyzed the proposal that Unicamp be the maintainer of a memorial on the premises of the former DOI-Codi (Information Operations Detachment – Internal Defense Operations Center) was also forwarded to Consu this Tuesday.

Unicamp maintains provisional custody of the artifacts found in an archaeological investigation carried out in August 2023 and was approached by the Public Prosecutor's Office to manage the memorial to be installed in the complex of five buildings, located in Vila Mariana, in São Paulo.

DOI-Codi was an intelligence and repression agency linked to the Army and was transformed into a center for imprisonment, torture and death of people who opposed the military dictatorship (1964-1985).

In the report, the WG argues that the University already carries out important work in the maintenance of historical collections and highlights the role of the Edgard Leuenroth Archive (AEL). It emphasizes that the possibility of Unicamp being responsible for managing the space expands its work fronts for the dissemination of knowledge and reinforces its commitment to democratic values. It also points out that the facility could provide new teaching, research and extension activities.

The document proposes a phased plan for the occupation of the buildings, including the need for architectural interventions, possible partnerships and sources of financing that would guarantee the financial viability of the project.

Since 2018, Unicamp has been part of the DOI-Codi Memorial Working Group, which carries out historical and archaeological investigations on the site in partnership with the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

Trans Quotas

The director of the Permanent Commission for Entrance Exams (Comvest), José Alves, presented to the University Council the final report of the WG on the adoption of quotas for access by trans people to the Unicamp entrance exam. The proposal should also be voted on by Consu next year.

The GT document states that the vacancies will be made available in the Enem-Unicamp notice, with the possibility of participation being open to candidates from both public and private schools.

According to the proposal, courses with up to 30 regular places must offer at least 1 place as a regular or additional place – at the discretion of the Congregation. In the case of an extra place, it is not mandatory to fill it. Courses with 30 or more places may offer two places.

The selection process includes a self-declaration upon registration, as well as a life story – a model already used in other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This story will be evaluated by a verification committee. In the 2025 entrance exam (held this year) at Unicamp, there were 203 candidates registered with a social name. Of these, 73 went on to the second phase.

Mediation Chamber

Also during the 189th ordinary session of Consu, civil servant Maria Augusta Pretti Ramalho presented the functioning of the Chamber of Mediation and Collaborative Actions (Camac) – a body linked to the Rector's Office that works to reduce conflicts, on a daily basis, between employees, between civil servants and teachers or between teachers and students.

Created in 2019, the body began operating in 2021 and currently has 87 volunteer employees. The coordinator says that the Chamber is developing a program to create reception spaces in various Unicamp units. These spaces carry out a preliminary approach and, if necessary, refer the case to mediation.

The objective, according to her, is to act in a way that prevents an everyday conflict from turning into an investigation or, in extreme cases, a criminal case.
