For the second consecutive year, Unicamp has made progress in the ranking of the best universities in the world by area of knowledge, prepared by the British consultancy Times Higher Education (THE) – considered one of the most prestigious organizations in the sector of international rankings of higher education institutions.
Released this Wednesday (22), the 2025 ranking shows that, compared to the previous year, Unicamp was better placed in the areas of Social Sciences and Education. In addition, it maintained its position in six other areas: Arts and Humanities, Economics and Administration, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Medicine and Health and Life Sciences.
According to the ranking, the two areas in which Unicamp has the best position – which places it among the 150 best universities in the world – are Arts and Humanities and Education (both in position 126-150). In the area of Social Sciences, the University now occupies position 251-300.
In the area of Economics and Administration, position 301-400 was maintained in relation to the 2024 survey. In the Technological and Exact Sciences sector, Unicamp also maintained its position in the areas of Computer Science (position 301-400) and Physical Sciences (401-500).

The positions in the Biological and Health sector, in turn, place Unicamp among the 300 best universities in the world in the two areas evaluated – Medicine and Health (position 251-300) and Life Sciences (201-250).
O THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025 is an international survey that ranks universities around the world based on their teaching and research areas.
The overall score that makes up the ranking by area of knowledge involves the use of 18 performance indicators separated into five major pillars: teaching quality (learning environment), research (volume, reputation and impact), citations (research influence), international perspective (global collaborations and diversity) and relationship with industry (knowledge transfer).
This ranking uses the same metrics used in other THE surveys, however, the weights of the indicators are changed according to the area of knowledge, in an attempt to adapt the metrics to the specificities of the areas.
For example, in Arts and Humanities, where the range of research outputs extends beyond the publication of articles in journals, less weight is given to citations of articles. On the other hand, in the area of Engineering, the indicators focus more on research productivity and industry collaboration.

According to Professor Renato Garcia, advisor to the Office of the Vice-Rector for University Development (PRDU), the result of the THE ranking is something to celebrate. “We received this data with great optimism. We have areas in which we are among the 150 best universities in the world,” he ponders.
Garcia noted that the consultancy receives information from more than 5 higher education institutions around the world. “In Education, for example, data was compiled from 767 educational institutions in 87 countries. In Social Sciences, 1.093 universities from 100 countries were included,” he argues. “I believe that the assessment of Unicamp’s performance is very positive,” he concludes.
