Three professors are running for the rectorship of Unicamp

The Organizing Committee of the Consultation approved the candidacies of professors José Antônio Rocha Gontijo, Maria Luiza Moretti and Paulo César Montagner

The Consultation Organizing Committee (COC) unanimously approved the names of three candidates for the position of rector of Unicamp for the four-year period 27/2025 on Monday afternoon (2029). The candidacies of professors José Antônio Rocha Gontijo, Maria Luiza Moretti and Paulo César Montagner were accepted by the COC. The consultation was scheduled for March 11 and 12, and a possible second round is scheduled to take place on March 25 and 26. After the approval, the candidates can begin their campaigns, which should include visits to the University's units, meetings with voters and holding debates.

The COC, chaired by professor Márcio Antonio Cataia, is attended by representatives of professors, students and technical-administrative staff.

After consulting the community, the University Council (Consu), the University's highest decision-making body, will draw up a list of three candidates and forward it to the state governor, who will appoint the new rector. Traditionally, the governor chooses the name with the most votes from the list of three candidates.

The consultation will mark the succession of Rector Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, in office since April 2021. Professors and technical-administrative staff who have an active functional status until January 24, 2025 will be eligible to participate in the consultation. Undergraduate and graduate students who are in regular enrollment status until February 6 of this year will also be able to vote.

In a meeting on the afternoon of this Monday, January 25th, the Organizing Committee of the Consultation (COC) presented the names of three candidates for the position of rector of Unicamp for the four-year period 1/2025.

Electronic voting

Up to ten days before the start of the election, voters will receive a message from evoto@unicamp.br in their institutional email. This message will inform them about the election. The day before voting begins, a new message will be sent to the voter's institutional email, this time with a link to access the virtual voting booth and a step-by-step guide to registering their vote.

After the procedure, the electronic system will send the voter a notice confirming that the ballot was received and the vote was registered. Unicamp used this electronic voting model for the first time in 2017. This year, for the second time, the same mechanism will be used to vote for the next rector. The Information and Communication Technology Executive Board (Detic) at Unicamp, which is responsible for the system, monitors the entire voting process.

Approximately 41.500 voters, including teachers, students and staff, are expected to participate in the process.

The date of the inauguration has not yet been set, as it depends on the progress of the consultation and any measures requested by the governor. The winner of the dispute is expected to take office between April 14 and 16 if the consultation is concluded in the first round, and between April 22 and 24 if there is a second round.
