Exhibition of works and posters closes the 21st edition of CAF

During the month of January, approximately one hundred students from 40 schools in Campinas and other cities in the region participated in workshops and activities

The presentation of papers and the exhibition of posters marked the end of the 29st edition of Science & Art on Vacation (CAF) this Wednesday (21), a program organized by Unicamp at the beginning of each year with the aim of stimulating the interest of high school students in scientific research and the arts. During the month of January, approximately one hundred students from 40 schools in Campinas and five other cities in the region participated in workshops and activities involving various areas of knowledge. In addition to the courses, the students had contact with different research projects.

Held at the Convention Center, the closing event was attended by professors Caio Costa de Oliveira, from the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research (PRP), and Marco Aurélio Cremasco, from the Office of the Vice-Rector for Outreach, Sports and Culture (Proeec). Professor José Alves, director of the Permanent Commission for Entrance Exams (Comvest) of the University, spoke to the students about the ways to access Unicamp.

Lais Cardoso Assis Chiovetto, a student at Culto à Ciência school in Campinas, attended the closing ceremony accompanied by her parents, Vivian and Oswaldo, and her grandparents, Aurora and Haroldo. “They always support me. They have been with me at other science fairs. And they make a point of participating in my projects,” said the student.

Alongside four other colleagues, Chiovetto presented a paper aimed at evaluating the development of young plants in a controlled environment, in which the plants are subjected to different types of light incidence.

“This time here at CAF was really cool,” he said. “We got to know some really interesting areas, like food, for example. We had activities in chemistry, at Feagri [Faculty of Agricultural Engineering], in a process that can really help in choosing a career.”

Colleagues Letícia Ortega and Milena Silveira, from Valinhos, were part of a team that developed a paper on the structure of DNA with the aim of discussing the use of technology in the creation of teaching materials. “This was an incredible experience. I met people I never imagined I would meet and, on top of everything else, it was very rewarding. I would definitely participate in another one,” said Silveira.

“The experience was also interesting because we didn’t spend all our time working on our project. We had contact with other workshops and, through this, we learned new things. I believe that I will take everything I learned here with me for the rest of my life,” Ortega added.

A group of ten students from different schools participated in a project involving the humanities. Guided by monitors from the Institute of Arts (IA), the group developed research around the work of Celeida Tostes, an artist and teacher who worked with sculpture, ceramics and performance. “She has very interesting work focused on the body and its movements,” explained student Gabriela de Sousa Antonio. The group carried out activities in the areas of drawing, performing arts, visual arts, woodcuts, cyanotypes and ceramics.

Leticia da Cunha Theodoro and Juan Victor Souza were chosen to give the closing speech, representing the students. “CAF has brought me many new things and a lot of knowledge. And I can say this with authority, because this is the second time I have participated,” said Theodoro. “For over 20 years, CAF has been offering opportunities and influencing the lives of many students,” said Souza. “CAF opens doors to new dreams.”
