Technical colleges discuss Artificial Intelligence in education and student retention

The event, which brings together teachers from Cotuca and Cotil, aims to address the effects of new technology on the form and content of disciplines

The impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on education and student retention are among the main themes of the 3nd Pedagogical Training Conference for Technical Colleges, which opened this Monday (XNUMX), at the Unicamp Convention Center.

The event, which brings together professors from the Technical College of Campinas (Cotuca) and the Technical College of Limeira (Cotil), both affiliated with the University, mobilizes experts to discuss the use of AI in the classroom. The aim is to address the effects of the new technology on the form and content of disciplines. The event will also discuss issues such as a project for self-regulation of schools and methodologies for professional education.

According to Professor Cristiane Megid, from the Executive Board of Basic and Technical Education (Deeduc) at Unicamp, the event aims to strengthen the process of continuing teacher training, in addition to deepening the relationship between the two schools and the University and between the schools and external organizations.

This year's event, Megid said, will address two major themes: Professor Matheus Souza, from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Feec), and postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Computing (IC) Roberto Oliveira will talk about AI in education.

Deeduc says that this front addresses the issue of improving teacher training. “Today there is a huge demand among teachers to learn how artificial intelligence works and understand its potential in education, and to achieve this, we have partnered with GGTE [Unicamp’s Educational Technology Management Group],” says Megid.

On Tuesday (4), on the Limeira campus, professor Gustavo Peltzer, from the National Institute of Technological Education (Argentina), and professor Carlos Leston, from the Escuela Média Técnica of the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), will discuss issues related to student retention and methodologies for professional education.

“Student retention continues to be a major challenge for schools. But we understand that excellent education involves, above all, inclusion,” Megid emphasizes.

Also on Tuesday (4), in Limeira, professors Soely Polydoro and Camila Fior, both from the Department of Educational Psychology at the Faculty of Education (FE), will present a self-regulation project in technical colleges.

For Unicamp’s rector, Professor Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles – who participated in the opening of the event –, one of the University’s greatest challenges is meeting the direct demands of the population. “And we are aware that the schools do this in an exemplary manner. In fact, the technical schools are the pride of Unicamp”, stated the rector. “The University has already shown that it is inclusive and of high quality.”

Directors Luiz Seabra (Cotuca) and Augusto César da Silveira (Cotil) also participated in the opening ceremony. At the beginning, Megid asked for a minute of silence in honor of professors Marcelo Corbini (Cotil) and Ralf Giesse (Cotuca), who passed away this month.
