Faculty of Education promotes discipline on sexuality and education

Classes take place on Wednesday evenings; on April 30th there will be a class open to the public on “Transmasculinities”, with Luiz Fernando Prado Uchôa and Erick Barbi

Starting this semester, Unicamp will offer the elective subject “Sexuality and Education” with the open class Gender Performativity and Education, to be held this Wednesday (19), at 19 pm. This is the first time in the history of the Faculty of Education (FE) that a specific curricular space will be dedicated to the systematic discussion of sexuality in the educational context.

The course, designed by professor Ronaldo Alexandrino, from the Department of Teaching and Cultural Practices, was highly sought after by students, exceeding the number of available places. “This demonstrates the growing interest of students in the subject and the need for a structured academic space to address issues related to sexual diversity, gender and education,” says Alexandrino.

Classes will take place every Wednesday, from 19:23 p.m. to 16:19 p.m., in room CB19. This Wednesday (19), exceptionally, the class will take place at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (Fausto Castilho Auditorium). As part of the activities, three open classes will be held, which will allow the participation of the external community. The theme “Gender Performativity and Education” will be taught by drag queen Dicesar, former participant of the Big Brother Brasil program, on TV Globo, and by professor Heloísa de Matos Lins on the XNUMXth (Wednesday), at XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. in the Fausto Castilho Auditorium. The class will be broadcast on youtube ,

Another class organized in the semester will be about “Transmasculinities”, with Luiz Fernando Prado Uchôa and Erick Barbi and should take place on April 30th. On the same day, there will be the launch of the book Simply Man: Stories about the everyday experiences of trans men. The class on Public Educational Policies and LGBTQIAPN+ Issues will be with state deputy Guilherme Cortez and Campinas councilor Paolla Miguel and is scheduled for June 11th.

The course syllabus includes the study of the social construction of sexuality, the constitution of LGBTQIAPN+ subjectivities and the impacts of school on the formation of social subjects, also addressing the role of education in promoting inclusion and reducing violence motivated by gender and sexuality prejudices.

According to the professor, the creation of the subject also represents a response to the systematic exclusion of the debate on sexuality from Brazilian educational curricula. Since 2012, with the rejection of the Homophobia-Free School Project, popularly known as the “gay kit”, discussions on gender and diversity have been neglected in educational spaces, impacting the training of teachers and students.

“The course not only strengthens inclusion within the university, but also paves the way for other higher education institutions to adopt similar initiatives,” says Alexandrino. In his opinion, Unicamp’s pioneering role in including this discipline reflects a commitment to pedagogical innovation and the defense of human rights in education.
