Yesterday, at the Clock Building of the Páteo Ferroviário de Campinas, the opening of the second edition of 2025 of the Campinas Innovation Week (CIW), an event that aims to bring together the science, technology and innovation ecosystem of Campinas. “It is important to give visibility to the projects and initiatives of universities, research institutes and companies in our city”, stated the mayor, Dario Saadi.
Unlocking the future is the theme of CIW 2025, organized by the City of Campinas, through the Secretariat of Economic Development, Technology and Innovation, of the Municipal Council of Science, Technology and Innovation (CMCTI). The event is co-organized by Fundação Fórum Campinas, Venture Hub and 100 Open Startups. According to the Secretary of Economic Development, Technology and Innovation, Adriana Flosi, the expectation is to have an audience of around 20 thousand people over the four days of the event, which continues until next Friday (13).
The event will once again take place at the Prédio do Relógio, located inside Páteo Ferroviário, in the Vila Industrial neighborhood. Built in 1903 and renovated in 2024 to host the first edition of CIW, the building housed the repair shop for the locomotives that transported coffee produced in Campinas and the surrounding region to the Port of Santos. “This event is symbolic not only because it brings together the main players in regional innovation, but also because it takes place here, in the historic Prédio do Relógio, a space that represents Campinas’ agroindustrial past and that, today, points to the future: a future supported by artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, digital health and sustainability,” highlighted the rector of Unicamp, Paulo Cesar Montagner.

The Secretary of Strategic Projects of the Government of the State of São Paulo, Guilherme Afif Domingos, attended the opening of the event representing Governor Tarcísio de Freitas. According to Domingos, by connecting different actors, the CIW is essential for the city to continue fulfilling its role as a unifying space for São Paulo. “Before becoming a center of science and technology, Campinas was a center of culture and agricultural production, and the city connected several regions of the state via the Mogiana railroad tracks. I remember leaving the White House and stopping here before heading to the capital,” said the Secretary.
The director of science, technology and innovation of the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of São Paulo, André Aquino, recalled that 55% of deep techs in the country (companies whose businesses are based on advances in science or engineering) are in the state of São Paulo, and Campinas stands out in this scenario. “This event is important to show how innovation is a tool for social transformation in the city, the state and the country,” he said.
One sector in which Campinas’ innovation ecosystem has a strong presence is information technology, a performance that is partly due to the Computer Law (Law No. 8.248/1991). Through tax benefits for companies, this law aimed to increase the country’s competitiveness and technological autonomy. When looking back on the topic, the Secretary of Science and Technology for Digital Transformation, of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Henrique de Oliveira Miguel, recalled the partnerships with companies and research institutions in Campinas, such as CPQD, Instituto Eldorado, Centro de Tecnologia da Informação Renato Archer (CTI), Venturus Centro von Braun and Unicamp. “A smart district is being planned in Campinas, the International Hub for Sustainable Development, HIDS, which will position the city as one of the most relevant innovation centers in the global south,” added Aquino.
Commenting on the creation of hubs in the state, Afif Domingos mentioned their importance in training qualified human resources. “In this scenario where the presence of Artificial Intelligence is growing, we need qualified people to meet the needs of companies, but especially for the state itself, so that it can provide support for companies and society as a whole. Training human resources is one of the biggest challenges today, and the hubs that are being designed in the state, including the one in Campinas, could make an important contribution in this regard,” said the Secretary.

Major research projects
Unicamp occupies an 80-square-meter stand, where it presents to the public not only our major research and innovation projects, but also initiatives such as HIDS Unicamp. “We chose to bring content that highlights some of the advances we have made, such as ecological corridors and the Electric Mobility Research Center (Cemobe),” said HIDS Unicamp coordinator Roberto Donato. Coordinated by Professor Tárcio Barros, from Unicamp’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (FEDC), Cemobe is one of the projects that will occupy HIDS Unicamp. With multi-user laboratories and a unique set of equipment in Latin America, the Center’s goal is to develop technologies related to electric mobility and energy transition.
The Innovation Agency Inova Unicamp brings to the Unicamp stand examples of technologies and patents developed at the University and available for licensing by companies. Also present are startups installed in the Unicamp Science and Technology Park and companies incubated in the Unicamp Technology-Based Business Incubator (Incamp).
This year’s CIW edition incorporated Campinas Health, an event organized by a multidisciplinary group of undergraduate and graduate students from courses such as medicine, mechanical engineering and computer science, who come together to discuss and present innovative solutions for the health sector, under the coordination of Professor Gustavo Fraga, from the Department of Trauma Surgery at HC Unicamp. “Campinas is a city with a natural vocation for innovation. And Unicamp is committed to increasingly being an active link between knowledge and practical application, between research and social and economic development,” concluded the Unicamp rector.
