A conference on emergency care by Professor Antônio Marttos, from the University of Miami (USA), opened the activities of the 3st WCTEL (World Congress of Trauma and Emergency Medicine) this Thursday morning (1), which is being held at Unicamp. Over the course of three days, specialists will discuss and present papers on exercise and sports medicine and studies related to the cardiovascular and neurology areas.
WCTEL brings together a series of congresses, such as the XXVII CoLT (Brazilian Congress of Trauma Leagues), the I Brazilian Congress of Neurology and Neurosurgery Leagues and the VIII Brazilian Congress of Academic Leagues of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
According to Gustavo Fraga, professor at the School of Medical Sciences (FCM) and president of the conference, the event is an initiative of academic associations in trauma, emergency medicine and other areas, such as pediatrics, psychiatry, clinical medicine, neurology, vascular surgery, among others. The conference brings together groups of students from Unicamp and other schools, from medicine, nursing, physical education, dentistry, as well as postgraduate students in physiotherapy.
“It is an honor for us to be here, organizing such a comprehensive event, at a time when FEF (Faculty of Physical Education) at Unicamp celebrates its 40th anniversary,” said Fraga.
According to the organizers, the internationalization of trauma and emergency techniques – which are the set of procedures and protocols applied in the treatment of patients in risk situations – is the main objective of WCTEL, which is being led by the Unicamp Trauma League, a student organization of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM).
By bringing together participants from different countries, regions and healthcare systems, the idea is to contribute to a global standard of care, explain the organizers.

Unicamp Dean Paulo Cesar Montagner – who participated in the opening of the congress – recalled the 40 years of FEF, which he joined in 1988. Since then, says Montagner, he has been following the growth of the Faculty.
“We are witnessing a generational change that has rarely been seen at the University. Of the 1970 faculty members, approximately one thousand have been at Unicamp for about 10 years. This means that we are facing a challenge, which is to know how to take advantage of the excellence and capacity of this young group, who are very well educated, as well as the accumulated experience of the faculty members who will soon leave the University,” said the rector.
“Events like this are essential to ensure a smooth generational exchange,” he added. “I have very positive expectations about the future of the University,” he concluded.
Also participating in the opening of the congress were the specialist in Exercise and Sports Medicine and professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Unicamp Sérgio Piedade and the acting director of FEF, João Paulo Borin.
