The Rector's Office regrets and vehemently condemns the detention by the Israeli government of councilwoman, doctoral student and Unicamp employee Mariana Conti and members of the Global Sumud Flotilla, an international humanitarian mission whose objective is to break the blockade in the Gaza Strip, bringing medicines and food, among other items, to the Palestinians.
The interception of vessels from the flotilla and the subsequent detention of Brazilian and foreign citizens in international waters, in addition to violating rights and putting the lives of peace activists at risk, reveals to the world the brutality that has characterized the actions of Israeli military forces, responsible for the deaths of thousands of Palestinians and the siege that condemns survivors to hunger and deprivation of all kinds, leaving them without the minimum means of subsistence.
The Rectory stands in solidarity with the protesters and joins those demanding the immediate release of the detainees. It also reiterates its call for dialogue, believing that this is the only path to ending this barbarity.
