Ana Maria Carneiro is the new coordinator of Nepp.

The Center for Public Policy Studies at Unicamp has over four decades of experience in the areas of health, education, and social protection.

The Center for Public Policy Studies (Nepp) at Unicamp inaugurated its tenth coordinator, Ana Maria Alves Carneiro da Silva, for the 2025-2028 term this Monday (November 3). In its 43-year history, Nepp is recognized for its multidisciplinary work and has played an important role in the implementation of national public policies in the areas of health, education, and social protection. 

At the inauguration ceremony, the rector of Unicamp, Paulo Cesar Montagner, highlighted the solid performance and significant contributions of Nepp to society and reinforced the university's support for the center. "Nepp preserves the commitment to research on public policies and is a rich space for debates in different areas, with a..." expertise "It is well-established. I would highlight its multidisciplinary nature, both in research areas and lines of action, and its observatories, which are important interfaces between areas of knowledge, in addition to its strong performance in scientific dissemination and publication," he stated. 

The general coordinator of Unicamp, Fernando Coelho, highlighted the already known and recognized potential of Nepp in proposing and evaluating public policies. "Nepp is an example of the role of the public university in contributing to improving people's quality of life and enhancing public policies," he commented.

The new coordinator, who has worked at Nepp for 15 years, holds a degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), a master's degree in sociology, and a doctorate in science policy from Unicamp. She is a researcher in the Researcher Career program at Nepp.

“I am happy to assume the coordination role and hope to contribute to the work developed at the Center. After taking office, we will begin our strategic planning. In addition to our work in the area of ​​evaluation, which is historical, we work with interdisciplinary studies in education and health, but also in studies on violence, security, social protection and the fight against poverty, areas that our researchers helped to found and consolidate,” she stated. 

Silva highlighted the work done so far and praised each colleague who held the position of coordinator. “Everyone faced challenges. We have an interesting characteristic because Nepp is not a center that specialized in one public policy, but in several, which were fundamental for Brazil, such as the SUS [Unified Health System]. We work on social assistance policies, such as minimum income policies, for example. We have an important history in these 43 years,” he concluded.

Her predecessor, Ana Lúcia Gonçalves da Silva, highlighted the collaborative efforts that built Nepp's history. "It was an honor and a privilege to lead the Center, building, with the team, relevant benchmarks for public policy."

Raluka Savu, coordinator of the Coordination of Interdisciplinary Research Centers and Nuclei (Cocen) at Unicamp, emphasized the strategic role of Nepp. "I highlight the collective achievements and the important role of bringing research closer to the formation of public policies."
