Unicamp and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, in Chile, signed, last Thursday (4), a letter of intent to begin a dialogue on collaborations. Approaching its 100th anniversary, the Chilean university – which was founded in March 1928 – says it is interested in establishing partnerships with Unicamp in various areas, from geology, through engineering, to agriculture and energy projects.
"Unicamp has a great interest in expanding its interaction with Latin American universities. We want to bring Chilean students and researchers here, and there are many common areas in which the two institutions can work together," said the rector of Unicamp, Professor Paulo Cesar Montagner.
The rector of PUC-Valparaíso, Nelson Vásquez, said he wants to expand relations with Unicamp. “Unicamp is one of the largest universities in Latin America, and we are very interested in strengthening our relationship. There are many areas in which we can cooperate, with the potential for student, researcher, and professor exchanges,” said Vásquez.
The general coordinator of Unicamp, Professor Fernando Coelho, said that one of the University's main strategies is to encourage relationships with institutions located in the so-called Global South.

“One of the strategies that Unicamp defined when designing its internationalization plans is to increase the flow of South-South interaction. That is, to think more carefully about our Latin American and Caribbean partners and with much more attention, also, to our African partners,” said Coelho. “In addition, we need to get closer to partners in India and China, that is, to look at the entire southern axis of the planet as an important alternative and a fundamental strategy,” he argued.
Since January 2022, PUC-V has held the highest distinction of excellence, being one of only five universities in Chile with seven years of accreditation, granted by the National Accreditation Commission. The university currently has approximately 18,6 undergraduate students, 1,5 professors, and 1,2 staff members.
The Chilean delegation also included the Vice-Rector, Alex Paz; the Director of the Smart Industry PhD program, Álvaro Pefia; the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Ricardo Soto; and Professor Vinícius Minatogawa from the Faculty of Engineering.
