The Vice-Rectorate for Research (PRP) presented, this Thursday (11), the Scientific Merit award to the best works of the 33rd edition of the Unicamp Scientific Initiation Congress. The evaluation took place in two stages. In the first stage, an internal committee, composed of 57 professors from the University, made a pre-selection of 102 research projects. In mid-November, the second stage took place, in which the 20 that received the award were chosen.
Held at the end of October, the Congress had a record participation of 1.661 students, including undergraduate students from Unicamp and other institutions, as well as high school students. In total, 1.499 posters were presented during the three days of the event. In 2024, there were 1.436 works and 1.593 students.

During the award ceremony, the Vice-Rector for Research, Ana Frattini, said that Unicamp has built a solid reputation in research. The professor cited, as an example, Unicamp's victory in the Institutional Merit category at the 2024 edition of the 22nd Outstanding Achievement in Scientific and Technological Initiation Award, offered by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

He also mentioned that the University ranked 1st in Brazil in the "Teaching" indicator of important university rankings, such as THE. (Times Higher Education) and the Folha Ranking. "This recognition is perhaps the result of a very strong characteristic of Unicamp, which is research, and this ends up overflowing into undergraduate studies," said the pro-rector. "You are the best in the country," she added, addressing the award winners.
Diversity of themes
The Vice-Rector for Extension, Sports and Culture, Silvia Furegatti, reminded the students that scientific initiation is a fundamental gateway to a good university education and drew attention to the diversity of themes addressed in the award-winning works. "I would like to congratulate the winners for the diversity of approaches, a characteristic that is always very interesting for us to build a pluralistic university," she said.
Professor José Luiz da Costa – who represented the general coordinator, Fernando Coelho, at the awards ceremony – said that the prize should further stimulate students' interest in research. "Unicamp breathes science," he stated.
