Summary

For Martinha Clarete Dutra dos Santos, former director of special education policies at MEC, it is necessary to invest in training teachers and interpreters and change the culture of schools, accustomed to “standardized” service. In her opinion, however, dropout cannot serve as a pretext for deaf students to once again be segregated into exclusive classes. “Historically, this type of policy has always resulted in marginalization, and Brazil has made several international commitments to reverse this,” she says, currently a researcher at Unicamp.
