Even after, from the 18th century onwards, silent reading became widespread, reading aloud was a form of common sociability, according to an essay written by professor Márcia Abreu, from the Institute of Language Studies of Unicamp. It was read aloud in salons, in literary societies, at home, at soirées and in cafes.
