Summary

The problem with mathematics in Brazil goes far beyond the shortage of students, of course. A few years ago, two Unicamp professors questioned the usefulness of opening more engineering positions at universities. Marcelo Knobel, current rector of Unicamp, and his colleague Fernando Paixão took as a starting point the results of Pisa (International Student Assessment Program), carried out every three years by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, with 15-year-olds from more than 70 countries. Pisa results are classified into six levels.
