Summary

— Even when we take data from other surveys, such as the ILO (International Labor Organization), Brazil has not been doing well for three decades, and the prospects for the future are not at all favorable. Countries like Taiwan and South Korea, which in the 1980s had much lower productivity, have moved ahead of us and the trend is for this gap to increase. This is already reflected in a low level of income for the population, less capacity for competition in the external scenario and a deterioration in the Brazilian trade balance — assesses Claudio Dedecca, economist at Unicamp.
