Summary
The military issue, brilliantly analyzed by professor Wilma Peres Costa in The Sword of Damocles (Hucitec/Ed. Unicamp, 1996), which pitted the Army against the Empire after the end of the Paraguayan War, hid, more than the discomfort caused by the emperor's non-acceptance of some circumstantial demands from the military, a fundamental and structural problem of the formation of the Brazilian State.
