To overcome these limitations, a group of researchers from the Device Research Laboratory (LPD) at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), in collaboration with colleagues at the University of California in San Diego, in the United States, developed an FTIR spectrometer based on silicon photonics – the same technology used today to manufacture computer chips, smartphones and other electronic devices.
