fiftieth anniversary official
The presentation of the Concertato show, which brings together classical music and comic acting, marked Unicamp's 5th anniversary on the night of the 49th and officially opened the series of activities that will celebrate, over the next 12 months, the University's fiftieth anniversary, which will be completed on October 5, 2016. The play was attended by members of the institution's Senior Management, teachers, staff, students and guests.
In addition to the presentation of the concert-show, in the auditorium of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM), the night of celebration included the launch of six books that are part of the Unicamp Ano 50 series, produced by Editora da Unicamp. In total, the collection has 50 works. A documentary exhibition made up of visual, textual and sound elements that tell different aspects of the University's trajectory was also opened in the lobby of the same auditorium. Later, the exhibition will be expanded and taken to a space in the Cesar Lattes Central Library (BC-CL). Afterwards, the exhibition will travel to locations outside the institution.
Also as part of the celebrations, the Unicamp Development Foundation (Funcamp) launched a collection of products with the University's brand. According to professor Ítala Maria Loffredo D'Ottaviano, president of the organizing committee for the 50th anniversary commemorative events, the institution was keen to start the celebrations with an artistic event. “We will have various artistic, cultural, sporting, scientific and festive activities throughout the year. The objective is to remind the university community and show society that Unicamp has not only been original and innovative, but has sought to fulfill its social commitment,” she said.
Rector José Tadeu Jorge highlighted that the celebrations for Unicamp's golden jubilee needed to be extensive, as the contributions made by the University to society could not be represented just in a solemn session. “These celebrations have the Unicamp feel, as they include dance, music, theater, cinema, science, education, etc. In other words, they cover all areas of human knowledge,” he stated.
Tadeu Jorge recalled that October 5th, in addition to being the founding date of the University, is also World Teachers' Day, the date of the establishment of the republic in Portugal and Saint Benedict's Day. “These are symbolisms that help explain the University’s success in such a short time, that take us back to our origins and that remind us of our commitments to social inclusion”, he considered.
CONCERTA
Concertato is a musical-theatrical show that features the Unicamp Symphony Orchestra and actors Carlos Simoni and Ricardo Puccetti, both members of the Interdisciplinary Center for Theatrical Research (Lume). The artistic direction is by Denise Garcia and the conducting is by conductor Cinthia Alireti. Produced by Fernando Vasconcelos and Cynthia Margareth.
Geopolitics is the 1st theme of the 'Perspectives' series As part of the academic and scientific events commemorating the University's Golden Jubilee, the cycle of debates “Unicamp Perspectives 8 Years” opened on the 50th, scheduled to take place until September 2016, at the Convention Center. The series will consist of 11 distinct events, involving current themes with political, economic, social, cultural, artistic and scientific relevance, with the participation of researchers and intellectuals from the University and other Brazilian and foreign institutions. “World geopolitics: what new paths will we have?”, was the theme of the first round table, in the morning, addressing the new structures of global power (USA, Europe, China, Russia); the all-encompassing Middle East conflict; the limits for BRICS action; the role of Latin America and Brazil. In the afternoon, at the second table, the possible restructuring of capitalism was analyzed; the continuity (or profound changes) of globalization; and China's future role. Wilson Cano, professor at the Institute of Economics (IE) and coordinator of 12 tables in the cycle “Unicamp Perspectives 50 Years”, said that the debates will focus on the political, economic, water and energy crises that Brazil has been going through. “We started the event with a discussion of major external and internal political problems that currently affect a large number of countries. Geopolitics has long ceased to be an impenetrable and enigmatic international chess, attracting more and more reflections in the scientific and political world.” The Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, according to Cano, brought the illusion that we would live in a phase of greater tranquility and peace in international relations, but that today we have a much fiercer capitalism due to the transformation of multinationals into large transnational companies. “If the old bipolarity is over, we have seen the spectacular resurgence of China and the rebirth of Russia and India, which together with Brazil created the BRICS – and there is much more fog on that horizon than promising certainties. The question we ask is: what will be left for us on the world stage? The expectation is that this event will show us paths we can follow.” The debate on global geopolitics was coordinated by political scientist Sebastião Velasco e Cruz, professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH), with participants including economist Juan Arturo Guillén Romo, from the Metropolitan Autonomous University (Mexico); historian and political essayist Perry Anderson, from the University of California (United States); and diplomat Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães, from the Rio Branco Institute. “The challenge of this table is to examine the future of international politics, the challenges of geopolitics, taking into account the current moment”, stated the coordinator. Velasco also came out in defense of the public university, which is under attack at this time of crisis. “We are immersed in a profound political crisis of an unprecedented nature and a politically determined economic crisis. In fact, as the crisis worsens, our detractors begin to preach publicly that, to solve governments' cash problems, public universities must be privatized. When we gather here, we celebrate Unicamp's history of successes and we say loud and clear that the nefarious program that the detractors offer us will not be victorious, that they will encounter tenacious resistance and Unicamp will be on the front line.” Professor Ítala D'Ottaviano, coordinator of the Unicamp Year 50 Commission, recalled that this cycle of debates continued the celebrations that began on September 30, with the staging of the opera “Don Giovanni”, by Mozart, entirely produced by the University. “Today we have the opening of academic-scientific events and, for this series 'Unicamp Perspectives 50 Years', with monthly round tables, we took great care in selecting relevant and challenging themes for contemporary times. Through these debates, Unicamp reaffirms its leading role on the national and international scene.” Representing rector José Tadeu Jorge at the opening ceremony, professor Teresa Atvars, dean of University Development, highlighted the event's objective of addressing relevant issues in the contemporary world for which governments have neither policies nor solutions. “This is due to the fact that these are extremely complex subjects, with many facets and a unique interdisciplinarity. It is this reflection that we want to promote in this year of debates, leaving a legacy for Brazilian society and international knowledge.” CRISIS OF CAPITALISM The second panel of the “Unicamp 50 Years Perspectives” cycle was on “Crisis of international capitalism: restructuring or new disorder?”, coordinated by professor Luiz Gonzaga Belluzzo, from IE/Unicamp, with the participation of Jan Kregel, from the Bard Institute of Economics College Levy and the University of Texas (USA); Pierre Salama, from the University of Paris 13 (France); and Riccardo Bellofiore, from the University of Bergamo (Italy). |
