“Private photography collectors in Brazil” is the new book by Fernando de Tacca, professor at the Institute of Arts (IA), launched at the opening of the IV Studium Seminar, which took place on the 9th. The book is the result of interviews with owners of six collections, active in the context of affirming Brazilian photography as critics, curators, thinkers and some also as photographers. They are Joaquim Paiva, Nakagawa Matuck, Rubens Fernandes Junior, Silvio Frota, Eder Chiodetto and the couple Georgia Quintas and Alexandre Belém.
“Photography has been a topic of interest to me for a long time and I realized that, in photographic studies, there were practically no publications about private collectors of modern and contemporary photographs. Hence, the idea of a project in this sense”, says Fernando de Tacca. “With the exception of Silvio Frota, I already knew all the collectors, who report photography from the 1980s, when I started photographing. There was a lot of ease of contact.”
According to the IA professor, the research did not focus on the collection but on the figure of the collector, since there is only fragmented data about each one. “The concern was to know who this character is, how he thinks, how he puts together his collection. Everyone was very generous, as it was about reconstructing a life trajectory, the conversations were long and required patience for any doubts that arose later. For example, to interview businessman Silvio Frota, I didn't need to go to Fortaleza; We spoke while he was in São Paulo, in a room he rented at the hotel.”
The book is being distributed free of charge, a condition required to use the resources of the Marc Ferrez Photography Prize, which the author won in 2014. “I believe I have brought together the most important group of collectors of contemporary and modern photography. But I mention some collections that are within the larger context of 'art collections', such as Marcoantonio Vilaça, Gilberto Chateaubriand, Figueiredo Derraz, Carlos Leal and Edmar Cid Ferreira, among others. Photography is part of these art collections, which requires another methodology, which is the basis for new research”.
STUDIUM SEMINAR
Fernando de Tacca is also coordinator of the IV Studium Seminar, which has as its theme “The places of photography in the contemporary scene” and is organized by Studium magazine, the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts and the Museum of Visual Arts (MAV). The opening lecture was given by professor Jorge Coli, who spoke about “Photography, time, death”. The event continued with “Reports and immersions in major photographic events”, on October 16th.
“Meeting with the artist: trajectories and creative processes” will take place on October 30; “Museological collections: perspectives and actions”, on November 6th. At the same time, the exhibition “The Photographer Character in Cinema” took place from October 13th to 16th, at Casa do Lago.
