Unicamp's Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering wins, for the third time, the title of “Outstanding Unit” by taking research results to the market
From the quality of the film or series we watch on the internet to weed control in the field. What relationship could these very different activities have with equipment management in a hospital? They are all part of a list of inventions by researchers at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (FEEC), from Unicamp, which were licensed for the public and private sector in 2020. Science and technology developed at the public university that are closer to our daily lives.
FEEC has recorded a 90% increase in the number of licenses in the last three years. It occupies 1st position in the Inova Unicamp ranking, with researchers, students, former students and teachers involved in a total of 37 of the 48 contracts signed by Unicamp last year. This is the highest license rate for a single unit and the university since 2003, after the creation of the Unicamp Innovation Agency, which began consolidating data annually.
Of the total contracts signed, 35 are from GETS. Software that manages medical and hospital equipment, capable of generating a great impact on people's lives, especially those who depend on the SUS. A negotiation that took five years with the Brazilian Hospital Services Company allowed the public federal university hospitals in the network Ebserh received individual usage contracts. This way, even if the health unit is separated from the group in the next ten years, for any reason, it will not lose its access license.
The positive result in licensing gave FEEC the title of “Outstanding Unit in Technology Transfer” in the Unicamp Inventors Award, which honors those who were involved in protection, innovation and entrepreneurship activities at the university. This is the third time that the Faculty has won the category. The other two were in 2018, when six patents involving inventors at FEEC were transferred to the business sector, and 2019, when four patents were licensed.
The director of FEEC, professor José Alexandre Diniz, says that the achievement is the result of joint and permanent work by the unit. “I feel very honored to control a sensational team with very competent professionals recognized by the market who work focused on what they do,” he said. FEEC's multidisciplinary curriculum is seen as a differentiator that encourages innovation, training students with technical and specific learning. According to Diniz, 20% of the subjects offered are laboratory, making it possible to combine theory and practice.
