Professor Alvaro Penteado Crósta, from the IG Department of Geology and Natural Resources, received a dedication in the book "Large Meteorite Impacts and Planetary Evolution VI", a special edition of the Geological Society of America (GSA) published at the end of 2021 about the conference of the same name that took place in October 2019 in Brazil. Initially, Crósta would be one of the editors of the special volume of the conference of which he was one of the main organizers, but for health reasons he was forced to step aside.

In the dedication written by the two editors, Wolf Uwe Reimold, from the University of Brasília, and Christian Koeberl, from the University of Vienna, the GSA recalls "its long and successful work on impact craters, as the basis of studies of impact craters impact in Brazil and South America, dedicating this special article to him". "Alvaro Crósta is a full professor of Geosciences in the areas of remote sensing, mineral exploration and planetary geology at the Institute of Geosciences at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. He has had a highly distinguished academic career, culminating in his tenure (2012-2017 ) as vice-rector of his university. In 2017, Álvaro was inaugurated as a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences".

"We are proud to dedicate this GSA Special Paper on the Large Meteorite Impacts and Planetary Evolution VI to our friend and colleague Alvaro Crósta for his excellent scientific work in the area of impact craters, his persistent efforts to promote impact craters across the South American continent, his successful dissemination of research in Brazil, and his efforts to bring the Brazilian and international research communities to collaborate on studies of impact craters, especially in the South American impact heritage. Before Alvaro, impact craters were virtually unknown in South America; their research placed them on the continental map", concludes the dedication, which can be read in full in English.

According to Crósta, "The dedication of the book 'Large Meteorite Impacts and Planetary Evolution VI', honored by professors Wolf Uwe Reimold and Christian Koeberl, editors at the Geological Society of America, left me deeply moved. In fact, carrying out this conference in Brazil, the 6th on the topic every 5 years, was a challenging task and involved a lot of work. It was the first time that it took place in South America and represented a forum of outstanding international scientific importance for the advancement of knowledge of this type of planetary geological process. And, most importantly, it was a very successful event that produced a reference book of outstanding importance. Even though, due to personal problems, I was unable to participate in the conference itself, and also in the editing of the book , it was a wonderful experience."

The Institute of Geosciences congratulates the professor for his dedication and for his vast contribution to Geology.
