Professor Maria Teresa Mantoan, from the Laboratory of Studies and Research in Teaching and Difference (Leped) at Unicamp, launches the book The school we want for everyone, written in partnership with professor José Eduardo Lanuti, from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS). The launch will be on a live, on August 18th, with the authors.
The work brings dialogues between teachers, focusing on the theme of inclusive schools. Mantoan says that, based on discussions during activities, the researchers realized what the most frequent questions were and decided to write the book focused on them. “Some questions that teachers had in relation to the development of teaching that served all students became increasingly clear to us. The book provides conditions for them to understand the meaning of teaching for everyone, without discrimination,” he says.
The discussions presented in the book cover the teaching format and assessments in the school environment. “Teaching as it is carried out today follows very pragmatic guidelines. It is based on a student model that the school defines, but this model is abstract, it is a representation of the student and not the true student. Each of us is a unique being”, says the teacher.

For her, schools in general work with a transmissive education system, in which learning is reproductive. “In other words, the student has to reproduce what was taught so that they can be well evaluated. Within this scheme, teachers are scared of students who deviate from the model,” she explains.
One of the problems with this system, according to Mantoan, is the distance between the content and the students' daily lives, which makes learning more difficult. “Listening to what students already know, understanding what questions they have and what they are interested in knowing makes us work on the content not as an end, but as a means for them to give meaning to that content”.
In the book, the researchers explain what school is for everyone and how to work with each and every student, bringing reflections on Regular Education and Specialized Educational Assistance (AEE). The work can be purchased at CRV publisher website.
“A manifesto for the school we want”
In addition to bringing dialogues between Mantoan and Lanuti, the work also includes a manifesto, entitled A manifesto for the school we want. Read an excerpt:
“The school we want simply proposes to do what it is supposed to do: teach everyone without any differentiations that could be considered exclusionary. This school respects the way a student deals with what affects them, with what happens to them and transforms them, that is, with their experience. She listens to everyone without any prejudgments, welcomes them unconditionally and is always reinventing herself.”
