Unicamp has new representatives at the Brazilian Academy of Sciences

The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) elected three more professors from Unicamp who will be inducted in 2017. In the area of ​​Earth Sciences, professors Alvaro Penteado Crósta, general coordinator of the University, and Carlos Roberto Souza Filho were elected as full members . Both are linked to the Geosciences Institute (IG). Professor Daniel Martins-de-Souza, from the Institute of Biology (IB), was elected as an affiliate member. The date of the inauguration ceremony has not yet been announced.

ABC celebrates its centenary of existence in 2016. It is a non-governmental and non-profit entity, which acts as an honorary scientific society and focuses on the scientific development of the country and the interaction between Brazilian and foreign scientists. The entity currently has around 700 members.

In the last election, more than 40 scientists of excellence in various areas of knowledge were chosen. The selection process for new members begins in September, with the nomination of candidates, which can only be done by full members of ABC, through the electronic voting system or by letter. All nominees are evaluated by their peers.

Alvaro Penteado Crósta
Full Professor at the Institute of Geosciences at the State University of Campinas, Vice-Rector of UNICAMP (2013-2017) and CNPq Research Productivity Fellow since 1983. His areas of academic activity are Remote Sensing and Mineral Exploration and Planetary Geology/Meteorite Craters . He is leader of the Geotechnology Research Group at UNICAMP. He served on the CAPES Geosciences Area Committee from 2002 to 2013, having been Deputy Coordinator in the period 2008-2010 and Area Coordinator in the period 2011-2013. He is a member of the CNPq Geosciences Advisory Committee, from 09/2015 to 06/2018 (alternate). He was elected Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists in 2010 and, that same year, received the Regional Vice President Lecturership of the SEG. He is currently Associate Editor of the Geological Society of America Bulletin and the Brazilian Journal of Geology. He is a member of the Governing Board Representatives of the Higher Education Program of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, Paris). In 1994 he received the Zeferino Vaz award from UNICAMP and in 2010 the Diploma of Merit from the Regional Council of Engineering, Architecture and Agronomy of the State of São Paulo. As a supervisor, he received the Honorable Mention of the CAPES Award in the Geosciences Area in 2008 and the CAPES Award in the same area in 2013.

Carlos Roberto Souza Filho
Full Professor at the Department of Geology and Natural Resources at the Institute of Geosciences (IG), currently leader of the Geotechnology Group. Level 1A researcher at CNPq, he is responsible for the research laboratories in Reflectance Spectroscopy (LER), FTIR Spectroscopy (LaFTIR) and Geo-referenced Information Processing (LAPIG). He is a NASA researcher on the ASTER, Mars-Earth Analogs, and HyspIRI programs. He is also part of the editorial board of the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation and Mathematical Geology. He is a full member of the São Paulo Academy of Sciences.

Daniel Martins-de-Souza
Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, at the Institute of Biology (IB), develops proteomic analysis projects in brain and peripheral tissue from patients with psychiatric disorders. He is a member of the editorial board of 9 scientific journals and reviewer of funding projects for 6 international agencies. In 2015, he launched as permanent editor the book series "Proteomics, Metabolomics, Interactomics and Systems Biology" by Springer (USA). He published 108 scientific articles (100 already published and 7 in press), 43 of these as first author (24 as complete articles, 8 reviews, 7 editorials and 4 comments) and 27 as last author. In 58 of his articles, Daniel is corresponding author. H18 (ISI) and H25 (Scholar) indexes with more than 2200 citations.
