Unicamp awarded teachers and students who stood out in 2016 at an extraordinary university assembly, held at the Unicamp Convention Center this Friday (16). The “Zeferino Vaz” Academic Recognition awards, Teaching Recognition for Dedication to Undergraduate Teaching, Scientific Merit of the XXIV Unicamp Scientific Initiation Congress and Inova Unicamp for Initiation to Innovation were awarded.
At the board of directors were the rector José Tadeu Jorge, the general coordinator of the University Alvaro Crósta and also the vice-rectors of University Development, Leandro Palermo Jr.; of Research, professor Gláucia Maria Pastore; Graduate, Luis Alberto Magna; of Extension and Community Affairs, João Frederico da Costa Azevedo Meyer, in addition to the executive director of Inova Unicamp, Milton Mori.
The ceremony began with the announcement of the award-winning teachers to Zeferino Vaz. Twenty-four professors who stand out in teaching and research roles were awarded (look the list of winners). Each Prize laureate received, from the hands of Rector José Tadeu Jorge, a diploma and a paycheck equivalent to three base salaries for an MS-6 professor.
The recognition is given annually to active professors who work on an exclusive dedication basis (RDIDP) and who have distinguished themselves in their teaching and research roles. Each teaching and research unit at Unicamp nominates one name per year, among those who presented an activity report. The winners are selected after several stages of examination by experts external to the University.
The winners of the Faculty Recognition for Dedication to Undergraduate Teaching award were subsequently announced. In its fifth edition, the award is aimed at valuing the activities of professors during undergraduate studies. The certificates were delivered by the Dean of Undergraduate Studies Luis Alberto Magna. “We could not fail to recognize the importance of the teacher’s role in undergraduate studies” he highlighted.
This year, 22 University professors were honored (see the relationship). The criteria for the award include didactic activity, scientific initiation guidance, performance in the assessment carried out by the student body, responsibility for subjects and the implementation of new subjects, among others. Recipients also receive a diploma and cash value.
To deliver certificates to those who received Scientific Merit from the XXIV Congress of Scientific Initiation at Unicamp (see the relationship) the Pro-Rector of Research Gláucia Pastore was invited. “It is through scientific initiation that we can build, day by day, the excellent research environment that we actually have”, she highlighted.
The dean of Extension and Community Affairs, João Frederico da Costa Azevedo Meyer also handed out certificates to student and teacher pairs. In total, 20 pairs won prizes.
The last part of the ceremony was reserved for the ninth edition of the Inova Unicamp Innovation Initiation Award (see the winners and details here). Inova's executive director, Milton Mori, said that the number of competitors has increased in the last year. “This shows our commitment to disseminating and strengthening the culture of innovation on Unicamp campuses.” Mori also took stock of the work of the Innovation Agency and was called upon to present diplomas to three pairs made up of a student and professor from the biological, exact and technological areas. General coordinator Alvaro Crósta recalled that the Paepe award was also recently awarded, within the scope of Unicamp's technical-administrative employees, as well as the 2016 Capes Thesis Award in which the university also stood out. “This set of awards is a reason for great joy because it shows the vigor and prominence that our university receives in Brazil and around the world”, he highlighted.
Rector José Tadeu Jorge highlighted the commitment of the recipients to the construction of knowledge and the history of the University itself. “There is no word that can represent Unicamp’s gratitude to the award winners and the people who were honored here today. The scale of the work everyone did goes beyond any language”, he thanked.
