NOTE OF CLARIFICATION
Unicamp is going public to deny rumors circulating on social media and messaging applications “informing” that the University predicted the occurrence of an unprecedented storm in Campinas at the end of January or beginning of February. Unicamp regrets that rumors of this nature, completely devoid of veracity, are being reproduced, causing apprehension among the population. He also regrets that the name of the institution was irresponsibly involved in this type of message.
Professor Hilton Silveira Pinto, former director and current guest researcher at the Center for Meteorological and Applied Agricultural Research (Cepagri), clarifies that any forecast about rainfall lasting more than five days “is either speculation or bad faith”. “We are unable to make predictions 20 days in advance. If we did, it would be wonderful, as we would make a lot of gains in agriculture,” he says.
According to Silveira Pinto, what can be anticipated is that rainfall in the current period should behave similarly to previous years. “We will have storms mainly in the late afternoon, with some flooding, but nothing very different from what happened in other summers. The population can rest assured, as there is no forecast of a major storm occurring in Campinas”, he assures.
