This Monday, January 16, the Permanent Commission for Unicamp Entrance Exams (Comvest) administered the tests on the second day of the second phase of the Unicamp 2017 Entrance Exam. 13.765 candidates took the Geography, History and Mathematics tests. Comvest recorded abstention of 10,6% on this second day, well below the 14,8% recorded on the second day last year. On Sunday, abstention was 10%. Among all cities, the lowest abstention rate recorded this Monday was in Campinas: 7,3% (compared to 10,6% in the previous year). In São Paulo, abstention on the second day of tests was 11,1% (compared to 15,7% in 2016).

According to Jayme Vaz, research coordinator at Comvest, the small increase in abstention from one day to the next draws attention. “It was surprising compared to last year, since the variation in 2016 was 1,6 percentage points and this year it was just 0,6”, commented Vaz.

This year, Comvest has recorded the lowest abstention rates in the last six years. In 2016, general abstention on the first day of the second phase was 13,2%; in 2015, 11%; in 2014, 11,3%; in 2013, 12,2%; in 2012, 10,7% and in 2011, 8%.

This Tuesday, January 17th, candidates will take the Biology, Chemistry and Physics tests.

Competition
In the opinion of Comvest coordinators, this Monday's tests had very diverse content, in addition to being well illustrated. In the Geography test, Comvest's deputy coordinator, Fosca Leite, highlighted a question drawn from the work of Mozambican writer Mia Couto, Sleepwalking Land, which asked candidates to speak about the issue of refugees and the war in Mozambique. “This is a very interesting question, because besides everything, the excerpt is from a book recommended for mandatory reading in Portuguese, which shows a certain interdisciplinary relationship in the tests”, stated Fosca Leite.

Another issue mentioned by the coordinators was the Mathematics test which, based on an everyday subject – traditional coffee and latte – asked candidates to calculate the percentage change in prices.

The second phase tests are held in 18 cities: Bauru, Brasília, Campinas, Guarulhos, Jundiaí, Limeira, Mogi Guaçu, Piracicaba, Presidente Prudente, Registro, Ribeirão Preto, Santo André, Santos, São Carlos, São José do Rio Preto, São José dos Campos, São Paulo and Sorocaba.
