The concrete signs installed outside the Unicamp Multidisciplinary Gymnasium (GMU), now restored, warn: this is a place with history. You can read there the names of great artists who have performed there since 1999. João Bosco, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil. Pato Fu, Zé Ramalho, Paralamas do Sucesso, Titãs, Rita Lee and Djavan. There are still a few missing: Pedro Bial, for example, was at the Convention Center, which is part of the university's Cultural Development Coordination (CDC) events complex. Tennis player Martina Navratilova, when she came to Brazil in 1994, performed at the gym as part of her farewell tour from the courts.
With a new floating wooden floor, suitable for even high-performance sports, the GMU is reopening on March 6th, starting at 14 pm. In addition to the floor, other improvements were made, such as the installation of bird screening around the entire building, painting, vacating areas that served as storage for materials from various Unicamp bodies, creating posts for concierge agents and washing the entire building.
There were also improvements to the rainwater collection and removal system, waterproofing of areas in auditorium three of the Convention Center, treatment of infiltrations in the Image and Sound Laboratory (LIS) of the Institute of Arts (IA), with interference in auditorium three, in addition to the renovation of the ceilings in the administrative areas located in the GMU. The Fire Prevention and Protection Project was prepared and approved by the Fire Department. The restrooms for the public and wheelchair users were renovated, and a room for medical care was created.
“Our expectation now is that the gym will be used from 8:30 am to 22 pm. There is a management committee with the participation of the Liga das Atléticas, so the athletics will use the space a lot for championships and Unicamp employees will also use it. A schedule will be made of all teaching, research and extension activities that will take place at the site”, stated the dean of Extension and Community Affairs João Frederico da Costa Azevedo Meyer.
Preferably, artistic and cultural sports activities will be scheduled. “With the new floor we can serve an Olympic team and also offer the best conditions for boys on an extension course in a remote neighborhood, for example, offering everyone the same quality”, highlighted Meyer.
The GMU has a capacity for 3 people sitting in the stands. According to Margareth do Carmo Vieira Junqueira, CDC coordinator, even though it has already been handed over to the university community, improvements will continue. “Our intention is to transform the complex into a space for conviviality and socialization, with a range of activities. The spaces above the court and around the gym can also be occupied.”
The Unicamp Multidisciplinary Gymnasium was opened to the community on February 3, 1986 and began to be used intensively for sporting and artistic activities. In November 1995, there was a tornado that detached, lifted and collapsed the roof over the gym itself. In 1998, the GMU was restored and reopened, but the floor had already suffered irreversible damage until the complete renovation, carried out now.
