The peculiarities of the Unicamp campus, its operation, the programs it offers, the institution's quality indicators, assistance, research, extension, health and many other references that emerge when talking about the University represent only a small part of the totality of its actions. Many ignore simple information that is part of everyday life on campus and that they would even be interested in knowing, especially students who have recently arrived at the institution.
Precisely to show the gear behind everyday actions, for the third consecutive year, the University Library System (SBU), together with the General Coordination Campus Tranquilo Program (CGU), carries out the Reception Program for Freshmen with useful information for new entrants. From early on, this Tuesday (7), students were being impacted by this initiative in Basic Cycle 2. They were received with a warm welcome and received the first information. Last year, around five thousand people participated in the activities.
According to librarian Maria Helena Segnorelli, coordinator of this program at SBU, the idea is to be present in the lives of these students from their first days at the University. “We have strategic information about applications, opening hours, restaurant operations and libraries. It is important that they soon live together with a set of information that is available to them in a concentrated manner”, she says. “On this day, until 19 pm, we will present our products and services.”
Since yesterday (6), Unicamp employees have been distributing kits with folders, squeeze bottles and information to students. Taking advantage of the actions of Strategic Planning (Planes), specifically the SBU, which brings together the University's library complex, is showing students how to preserve collections. Each library received illustrative videos of how this preservation is carried out and how to deal, for example, with bibliographic material.
The collection preservation program brings together professionals from the various libraries at Unicamp who, together, thought of guidelines to make the best use of these spaces on campus and how to preserve their collections, which are of inestimable value. “The units’ libraries have varying opening hours. BCCL, for example, is open from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 22:45 pm”, he highlights.
In the Basic Cycle, next to the SBU stand, there was the Community Health Center (Cecom) stand. Nurse Miriam Silva was already giving instructions to students who were looking for the place. She commented that the center provides free care to the university community and that today it brought Vidas, an internal health care vehicle, to this space. It is a mobile unit, an ambulance equipped to deal with different complications, clinical and trauma. The phone number for Vidas is (19) 3521-6000. Vidas is part of the Campus Tranquilo Program and is coordinated by Cecom, with support from the campus City Hall Surveillance Service.
Cecom is also providing explanatory material on dengue fever, yellow fever, AIDS and the Testing and Counseling Center (CTA), which carries out tests for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C. The CTA carries out urgent and scheduled exams free of charge for students, teachers and employees, and is located on the third floor of Cecom.
Freshman Pedro Ramos, a Mechanical Engineering student, says he is really enjoying studying at Unicamp and chose this course due to the institution's tradition. “I live in SP and have attended other universities, but I chose to stay here after visiting the campus, which really surprised me. At other universities, there is generally only a reception for freshmen. Here at Unicamp we have several initiatives that end up helping to minimize possible adaptation difficulties. Pedro has already paid a visit to the 'Cesar Lattes' Central Library."
Maria Helena emphasizes that all students are welcome at the libraries, as their staff are available to welcome them. “This is an activity that we do with care and dedication,” she expressed. She also remembers that students can also access the Unicamp Digital Library in order to consult dissertations and theses, e-books, electronic journals. And even more: "students who have questions can contact the SBU Portal and access your chat using the 'Talk to the librarian' link. We offer professional service with real-time responses, everything to make the student’s life easier”, he guarantees.
For Pedagogy student Natália Honório, who came from Jacareí, SP, this Unicamp program works as an important support for students, mainly because the University receives people from different cities, states and countries. “People will indeed need information at some point in their lives. I needed to know more about the Eduroam wi-fi network, but I'm sure it won't be my last consultation”, she emphasizes.
Unicamp's Freshman Reception Program was recently awarded an award in Mexico, says Regiane Alcântara, SBU coordinator. “Our goal is to welcome students, offer information and make our work a reference for students on campus and beyond,” she highlights. Read about the award In Mexico.
