Registration is now open for the 9th edition of the National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB), project developed by the History Department at Unicamp. The first stage of registration (with a lower value) continues until March 26th. The second phase ends on April 28th – or until the limit of interested parties is reached.

The ONHB has a completely original format and is open to History teachers and students in Elementary (8th and 9th years) and High School (all years) from public and private schools. In 2016, the Olympics brought together 42,7 students from cities in all Brazilian states, with significant participation from the Northeast region. This year, the expectation of the ONHB organization is that the number of registrants will be even greater.

How does it work?
The Olympiad is made up of five phases carried out online by teams made up of a History teacher and three students. Each phase lasts one week. The answers (multiple choice questions and tasks) can be prepared by participants through debate with colleagues, research in books, the internet and guidance from the teacher.

After the online phases, the finalist teams participate in the in-person grand final, which takes place at Unicamp, in Campinas-SP, on the 19th and 20th of August. In the final, the teams take an essay test and, the following day, participate in the awards ceremony with the presentation of medals.

“ONHB has a completely innovative proposal. In addition to the main objective - which is to promote the teaching of History - its proposal is to encourage the development of critical analysis and discussions on the most varied subjects, through research, the search for information, texts, images and maps. Participation also allows involvement with colleagues and the teacher”, explains ONHB coordinator, Cristina Meneguello.

The first phase will begin on May 8th, ending the fifth stage on June 10th. After the five stages, at least 200 teams (800 participants) are classified for the in-person final.

4th Teacher Training Course
The Olympics also includes a program aimed at training teachers. This year, the 4th ONHB Training Course: “Images in the classroom” will be held between March 1st and May 10th, through online classes recorded with great experts from Unicamp, teaching materials and activities accompanied by tutors. The objective is to enable teachers to use images that contribute to the teaching of History in the classroom. In total, more than 560 teachers signed up and will participate in the training course in 2017.
