The exhibition “Darwin in Brazil, the journey of Beagle”, the first held by the Unicamp Exploratory Science Museum at the César Lattes Central Library (BCCL), will be open to the public this Thursday (11), at 12:30 pm. With objects from the traveling exhibition on the theme, created by the Zoology Museum of the University of São Paulo (MZUSP), as well as taxidermied animals from the Zoology Museum of the Institute of Biology (IB) and other objects, the exhibition seeks to represent the passage of the young naturalist Charles Darwin along the Brazilian coast in 1832 aboard the ship Beagle. It was almost 5 years on board the ship. When passing through Brazil, Darwin visited the coast and visited Fernando de Noronha, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro.

“The MZUSP exhibition, curated by professor Maria Isabel Landim, went on tour. We saw the opportunity to associate the Unicamp museums in collaboration with the USP museum for the first time, together with BCCL”, says the exhibition curator and museum project director Regina Andrade Tirello. The exhibition is made up of panels with texts about Darwin and his theories, in addition to display cases, or illuminated wooden crates containing specimens representing animals and plants collected by the naturalist. Books related to the topic will also be on display. The taxidermied animals at the Unicamp Zoology Museum are also those species that were studied by Darwin.

Biology students doing degrees and internships at the Exploratory Museum helped research the naturalist's work. Charles Darwin revolutionized science with his theories for the evolution of species, stating that it occurs through natural selection. “The exhibition brings a very contemporary vision to children and young people, a way of talking about diversity and ecology suitable for school audiences”, highlighted the curator.

The exhibition is also part of the agenda of activities for the 15th National Museum Week of IBRAM (Brazilian Institute of Museums) at the University. Schools interested in guided tours should get in touch by sending an email to sectoreducativomc@gmail.com
