The Northeastern States concentrate the largest number of students who will participate in the final of the 9th National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB), which will be held on the 19th and 20th of August at the Unicamp headquarters campus. In total, 307 teams were called up for the grand final. This year's edition had 12.028 groups, a total of 48 thousand students registered in all Brazilian states.
Ceará is the State with the highest number of finalists (119 teams), followed by Rio Grande do Norte (60 teams), São Paulo (37 teams) and Bahia (24 teams). Only the three northeastern states (Bahia, Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte) together account for 66% of the total number of finalists in the competition.
The teams that now advance to the final went through five phases of tests carried out online, lasting one week each. Multiple choice questions and task completion were answered by participants through debate with colleagues, research in books, the internet and guidance from the teacher. The teams are made up of a History teacher and three students. The competition is open to students in the 8th and 9th years of Elementary School and all years of High School.
For the ONHB coordinator, Cristina Meneguello, the northeast's performance is historic in the competition. “We believe that this is due both to the culture of participation of schools in Olympics and extracurricular activities in these states and to the immense involvement of students and teachers with the ONHB, which is repeated every year and translates into a huge number of registered teams"
Final
The final of the 9th edition of ONHB will be held on August 19th and 20th. On the first day (Saturday), the teams will take the test in person in the morning, without the presence of the teacher. The result will be announced on Sunday morning in a ceremony where 15 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze medals will be distributed, according to the score. The rest receive medals of honor for merit.
ONHB
ONHB is a project carried out by the History Department at Unicamp. In 2017, in its 9th edition, it is consolidated as an important learning tool for teaching History. With a totally innovative proposal, its main objective is to encourage the development of critical analysis and discussions on the most varied subjects, through research, the search for information, texts, images and maps. Participation also allows for engagement between peers and the teacher. It is supported by CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and the Postgraduate Program in History at Unicamp.
