Pedro Henrique Sacramento de Oliveira, a student at Colégio Passo (São Paulo), received this Thursday a Gold Medal at the International Informatics Olympiad, which took place this week in Tehran, Iran. The International Informatics Olympiad is a competition along the same lines as International Mathematics Olympiad, held last month for the first time in Brazil (in which, incidentally, Pedro also participated, having received an Honorable Mention).

More than 300 students from 84 different countries compete in the International Computer Olympiad. In the competition, high school students must solve problems using computers, in a marathon of logical and scientific reasoning, and knowledge of computer programming. The competition is very fierce, with the best competitors from countries such as China, the United States, Russia and Japan competing for medals. It is only the third gold medal that Brazil has achieved, although it has more than 40 medals in total. Rogério Aristida Guimarães Júnior, from Colégio Farias Brito (Fortaleza) also received a bronze medal in Tehran. The Brazilian team was completed by Gabriel Silva Simões and William Hideki Kondo, who performed well but failed to win medals. The Brazilian team was led by Professor Guilherme Albuquerque Pinto.

The Brazilian team was selected by the Brazilian Computer Olympiad (OBI), a competition for elementary and high school students, promoted by the Brazilian Computing Society and coordinated by Unicamp. OBI is sponsored by CNPq - National Council for Scientific and Technological Research, of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Communication.
