Engaging students in their own learning is the key to a revolutionary pedagogy, according to Miachael O'Loughlin, from the North American Adelphi University, who was at Unicamp this week. The professor participated, this Thursday (21), in the cycle of lectures at the Graduation, Teaching and Learning Support Space program (EA)2 of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies (PRG), which seeks to promote innovation in educational strategies and practices at the University.
“In 30 years, I have never given a lecture. I did this in the first half of my career, never again. I am convinced that it is a waste of time”, stated O´Loughlin, who came to Unicamp at the invitation of professor Ana Archangelo from the Faculty of Education (FE). For him, teaching strategies must be designed to make students think and develop critical perspectives.
O'Loughlin has among the pillars of his pedagogy the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire and how he defends student autonomy and the liberating character of education. “The more neoliberal and conservative the world becomes, the greater the pressure on universities that disrupt the status quo. You need to educate to disrupt it,” she emphasized.
(EA)2 seeks to take advantage of the experience of professors who visit Unicamp, inviting them to speak to professors, researchers and students about their teaching practices. Follow the schedule on the program website.
