The Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing (Imecc) held the workshop this Friday (29) Mathematics, Applications and Scientific Societies with the aim of debating the relationship between research carried out at Unicamp on mathematics with research entities from other areas of knowledge.
According to Carlile Lavor, professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics at Imecc and organizer of the event, the proposal was to take advantage of the beginning of the celebrations of the institute's 50th anniversary to bring together the activities developed by Unicamp researchers and scientific societies that in some way work with the math. "We want to discuss the relationship between mathematics within these scientific societies, as mathematics can serve as a link between them", he explained. “Our relationship between SBM and SBMAC has existed for some time. But the intention is to extend it to other entities, precisely because they all need mathematics. Mathematics could gain new problems related to other areas of research and, on the other hand, these new areas could have help from mathematicians”, assesses Professor Carlile, who also remembers that several complex problems in reality are on the border between the classical areas of scientific knowledge.
The Imecc workshop is part of the 2017-2018 Mathematics Biennium, a series of national and international actions and events that aim to reflect on mathematics in the environment of Brazilian scientific and technological development. Among the events that should take place in the next period are the National Science and Technology Week from October 23rd to 29th, whose theme this year will be Mathematics is in Everything. In August 2018, the International Congress of Mathematicians will also be held in Rio de Janeiro and in September 2018 the National Congress of Applied and Computational Mathematics (CNMAC), which will be hosted at Unicamp.
Representatives from the Brazilian Mathematics Society (SBM), Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC), Brazilian Statistics Association (ABE), Brazilian Computing Society (SBC), Brazilian Physics Society (SBF) were present in the Imecc auditorium. , Brazilian Society for Operational Research (Sobrapo) and the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (Ifors).
