Unicamp took the lead in the QS Brics 2017/2018 ranking among Brazilian universities, according to report released this Thursday (23) by the international consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), responsible for the evaluation. The list considers 300 universities from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the so-called Brics, countries with emerging economies. Unicamp appears in 12th place in the ranking, followed by USP, which is in 13th place, tied with Saint Petersburg State University (Russia). In the previous edition, Unicamp was in the same 12th position, but USP held 10th place.
The QS Brics result was welcomed with satisfaction by rector Marcelo Knobel. “The result of yet another ranking consolidates Unicamp’s position in the world higher education scenario, showing once again the strength of the public education system in the state of São Paulo, and the importance of society investing in quality public universities”, analyzed the leader.
The current edition of the ranking is once again dominated by Chinese higher education institutions, which account for the top four positions. Among the top 10, China has seven universities, which demonstrates the importance of the investments the country has made in education. The best placed non-Chinese institution in the list is Lomonosov Moscow State University, in Russia, which appears in fifth place.
After Unicamp and USP, the most prominent Brazilian university in the QS Brics ranking is the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), which is in 31st position, followed by Unesp, in 34th position. According to the list, the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC) is the fifth best institution in Brazil, occupying 42nd place.
QS Brics takes into account eight indicators to assess the quality of universities, each with a specific weight.
