Unicamp was considered the best university in Brazil, according to the 2016 General Course Index (IGC) ranking of the Ministry of Education (MEC), released on Monday (27). The university scored 4,3744 points and maintained first place, which it has held since IGC 2014. In second place was the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul with an average of 4,2985.
Unicamp is the only state in the top 11. Among the 20, the majority are federal universities. Since entering the evaluation system in 2011, Unicamp has always been among the best placed, within the maximum score of five. "This consolidation of Unicamp's position demonstrates excellence in teaching, as well as in research. In the other rankings, recently released, several research indicators have a very strong weight, which is not the case in the IGC assessment, which has proof of Enade as a strong component", explained rector Marcelo Knobel.
Dean of Undergraduate Studies Eliana Amaral states that the index confirms other evaluation processes that have identified Unicamp among the best universities, even on the international scene. "The IGC is part of the National Higher Education Assessment System and confirms Unicamp's excellence", she comments.
The IGC calculation is carried out annually and takes into account, according to the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anisio Teixeira (INEP), several criteria. Among them are the average of the Preliminary Course Concepts (CPCs) of the last three years, which considers the Enade evaluation cycle (student performance evaluation), weighted by the number of enrollments in each of the courses computed; the average of the evaluation concepts of stricto sensu postgraduate programs attributed by CAPES in the last three-year evaluation available, weighted by the number of enrollments in each of the corresponding postgraduate programs and the distribution of students between the different levels of education, undergraduate or postgraduate stricto sensu.
