The 2018 edition of the program Science & Art on Vacation began this Wednesday (3) with the opening table in the auditorium of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM). The program aims to open the doors of the University to young people from high schools, who will have the opportunity to get to know Unicamp by carrying out tasks on scientific research and artistic expression. The activities will take place until February 2nd.

Held for the 16th time, Ciência & Arte nas Férias brings together 140 students from 47 public schools in the region of Campinas, Limeira and Piracicaba in this edition. Over the next four weeks, young people will participate in 45 individual projects and eleven workshops related to the areas of arts, humanities, chemistry, biology and health.

For the general coordinator of the University, Professor Teresa Atvars, the program is consolidated, being positive as a way of awakening the interest of high school students in science. “As they get to know Unicamp, they feel encouraged to take our entrance exam in the future, with a better perception of which profession they want to have in their lives,” she said.
"Science & Art in the Holidays has a huge impact on the internal and external community, as it establishes a strong connection between Unicamp and the public schools of Campinas, Piracicaba and Limeira", assesses professor Munir Skaf, pro-rector of research at Unicamp and one of those responsible for the program. “It is a program that attracts and encourages teenagers to study science and arts.”

In addition to individual projects and workshops, participants in Ciência & Arte nas Férias will visit laboratories and other Unicamp facilities with the help of monitors; and have lunch at the University Restaurant. Also part of the program are some lectures, such as the opening one given by professor Daniel Martins de Souza, from the Department of Biochemistry and Tissue Biology at the Institute of Biology, about the profession of scientist. “Unicamp is a research-oriented university, and I will talk about the importance of science and research. With some examples I will show that anyone can be a scientist”, explains Daniel Souza.
Present at the opening table, professor Antonio Admir Schiavo, Campinas Oeste regional education director of the State Education Network, assesses that the Science & Art on Vacation program is an excellent opportunity for public school students to make contact with Unicamp and start thinking about your future careers. "The fact that our students are here is important for them to be interested in Unicamp, for them to know that the university is not beyond their reach. For young people it is a possibility of opening up to knowledge."
