The delegation from the Italian State of Umbria was received at the Rector's Office this Tuesday morning (30). The main objective of the meeting was to continue the dialogue to bring to Campinas and close to Unicamp a group of companies in the biomedical area. The Italian region is home to a production, research and innovation hub in the area. Cooperation in the area of food and culture was also discussed, with the possibility of bringing to Brazil a traditional Italian jazz festival, Umbria Jazz, held in the city of Perugia in July.
The Italian delegation has just signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of the State of São Paulo, aiming at cooperation in the economic, health, social, scientific and cultural areas. Italian senator Fausto Longo has been mediating the dialogue between Italian businesspeople and Brazilians. “We seek to maximize what is best in both countries so that the Italy / Brazil relationship can result in a more competitive insertion of both in the international market”, he highlighted.
The meeting was attended by the person responsible for the International Relations and Cooperation Service of the Umbria Region and Umbria Jazz, Giampiero Rasimelli; the director of the Health Area of the Umbria Region, Walter Orlandi; and the person responsible for the international area of Confindústria, an entity representing business in Umbria for the biomedical sector, Maurizio Petrozzi.
Rector Marcelo Knobel stated that the collaboration with Italy represents another important advance in Unicamp's presence in the world. “It’s an important region, with a traditional university. We are willing to move forward in collaboration,” he said. The vice-rector of Extension and Community Affairs Fernando Hashimoto and the advisor to the Executive Directorate of International Relations Elena Brugioni gave information about Unicamp and the Institute of Arts to the visitors.
Municipal Health Secretary Cármino de Souza also participated in the reception. He commented on the creation of the biomedical hub to meet the interests of Brazilian, Italian and Unicamp businesspeople. The secretary states that in the wake of the hub, a hospital unit focused on cancer research and treatment could be created, complementary to what already exists in the city, but this still depends on financing.
