The National Olympics in History of Brazil (ONHB), a project developed by the Department of History at Unicamp and which this year reaches its 10th edition, is open for registration. The first stage of registration (with discount) continues until March 20th. The second phase ends on April 24th – or until the limit of interested parties is reached. ONHB is a project with a completely original format and aimed at History teachers and students in elementary (8th and 9th years) and high school (all years) in public and private schools.

In 2017, the Olympics reached a record number and brought together 48 thousand students from cities in all Brazilian states, with significant participation from the Northeast region. This year, when the project's 10th anniversary will be celebrated, the organization's expectation is that the number of registrants will be even greater.

How does it work?
The novelty of this edition is the addition of another phase in the competition, going from six to seven – including the in-person final in Campinas-SP. The tests are taken online during six phases and by teams made up of a History teacher and three students. Each phase lasts one week. The answers (multiple choice questions and tasks) can be prepared by participants through debate with colleagues, research in books, the internet, teacher guidance, in addition to a range of documents and references offered by the organizing committee.

After the six online phases, the finalist teams participate in the in-person grand final in Campinas-SP, on the 18th and 19th of August. In the final, the teams take an essay test and, the following day, participate in the awards ceremony with the presentation of medals. In 2017, 307 groups were in the final.

“ONHB was designed to encourage the development of critical analysis and discussions on the most varied subjects. To this end, we offer information, texts, images and maps to be analyzed and researched to prepare responses”, explains ONHB coordinator, Cristina Meneguello.

Participation also allows involvement with colleagues and the teacher, contributes to the teaching of History in the classroom, teamwork and allows participants to learn how to carry out research and analysis just as historians do. “Therefore, unlike other competitions, the History Olympiad does not require or expect the student to have prior knowledge of the content presented, but rather, learn while taking the tests”, added Cristina.

For Ana Letícia Reis de Oliveira, from Porto Velho, who was in the final in 2017, the ONHB provided more knowledge. “By taking the tests, I had access to information and content that I had never heard of, historical facts, incredible documents that I would not have known about without the Olympics,” she said.

The first phase will begin on May 7th, ending the sixth stage on June 16th. After the six stages, at least 200 teams (800 participants) will be classified for the in-person final. The project has support from CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and is developed by the Department of History through the participation of teachers, postgraduate and undergraduate students.

5th Teacher Training Course
The Olympics also includes a program aimed at training teachers. This year, the 5th ONHB Training Course has the theme “Narratives of America: speeches and local dynamics” and will be held between March 1st and May 10th. Classes are online and recorded with leading experts from Unicamp and professors from other universities. The course also has teaching materials and activities accompanied by tutors. The objective is to train the teacher so that he or she can contribute to teaching the proposed topic in the classroom. Teachers guiding the teams can participate in the course at no cost and other interested parties can register for a fee.
