Fapesp Agency – The rate of obese Brazilians has increased by 60% in the last 10 years, according to data from the Ministry of Health, and with it increased cases of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other health problems related to being overweight. Some of the main researchers and experts interested in understanding the cultural and biological aspects behind this phenomenon will meet at FAPESP headquarters on April 3, during the premiere of the TV program Open Science – a partnership between the Foundation and the newspaper FSP.

The monthly program will be held in the FAPESP auditorium and shown live on TV Folha, the FAPESP website and the Agência FAPESP page on Facebook. An edited version will be available on the TV Folha and Agência FAPESP websites.

In the premiere program, the guests will be researchers Licio Velloso, from Unicamp, and Carlos Augusto Monteiro, from the University of São Paulo, and nutritionist Sophie gave.

Velloso, coordinator of the Center for Research on Obesity and Comorbidities – a Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center (CEPID) funded by FAPESP – will address the topic of obesity and related diseases from a medical point of view and talk about how much science has advanced in treating and understanding the causes of the problem.

Monteiro, professor at the Faculty of Public Health at USP and coordinator of the most recent edition of Food guide for the Brazilian population, will address the idea that growing global obesity is, in part, a consequence of the consumption of ultra-processed foods.

Deram, an expert in eating behavior and PhD from the USP Faculty of Medicine, will talk about how to inspire individuals to live a happier and healthier life by changing their family world.

The mediation will be carried out by journalist Sabine Righetti, a specialist in scientific journalism from Unicamp, with a master's degree and doctorate in scientific and technological policy from the same institution.

The program will last 1h30 and will be divided into five blocks. Viewers will be able to submit questions via the Agência FAPESP page on Facebook. Selected questions will be answered by the debaters.

Other invited experts will participate through recorded interviews, including Denise Bernuzzi Sant'anna, professor of History at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) and scholar of the image of fat people in society.

the first episode of Open Science will be broadcast on April 3rd, starting at 15 pm, on the FAPESP website (www.fapesp.br), via the Agência FAPESP Facebook page (www.facebook.com/agfapesp) and on the TV Folha website (www1.folha.uol.com.br/tv).

Expanded audience
The TV program Open Science will address major topics under discussion today, showing that science is close to society and contributes to providing answers to its problems and challenges.

With a modern, dynamic setting and a relaxed atmosphere, the proposal is to present the themes to the public in a simple and agile language to encourage the participation of young researchers, students and the interested public – bringing to society's knowledge the research supported by FAPESP, as well as the exchange and dissemination of science produced in the State of São Paulo and in Brazil.

“With the program, we hope to respond to the concern that what scientists do is incomprehensible and show that it is not only understandable but can benefit people. The series will be a way for scientists to communicate more with society”, said José Goldemberg, president of FAPESP.

The joint production of the program Open Science is part of an agreement between FAPESP and FSP, which also foresees the publication of reports from Agência FAPESP, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, in the printed and online editions of Folha.
