When visiting some of the engineering units and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, it was possible to find enthusiastic students interested in finding out more about Unicamp. Some brought the sparkle in the eyes of those who dream of attending a public university. Others were ecstatic with the size of the University and the variety of courses available. The reality is that, hearing from monitors who are passionate about their courses, made it possible for them to enjoy a little of what Unicamp can offer. Below are reports from those who saw it, liked it and want to return next time, but, of course, as an undergraduate student.
“I want to come here”
Larissa Lourençon came from Jundiaí accompanied by her father, Romualdo, with a defined objective: to visit the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FCF). “I want to come here”, exclaims the young student who intends to study Pharmacy at Unicamp. Larissa doesn't want another University. Her motivation certainly increased after today's visit. She has always been interested in Unicamp, as she believes it is a University focused on research and comprehensive in training professionals. “I have a very good feeling for Unicamp”, she highlights. For the second time visiting UPA, she clarified all her doubts with FCF professors João Ernesto de Carvalho and Rodrigo Ramos Catharino, including about her desire to undertake an exchange in England. Her father went to great lengths to ensure that his daughter could visit the University. “I made a point of accompanying my daughter and I give my utmost support for her to come and attend Unicamp. It’s her dream,” says Romualdo.
Courage to let go of everything
Friends Lucas Pimentel Migliatti and Pedro Henrique Tresso Alves disembarked at 9 am from Mirassol and São José do Rio Preto, respectively. It was a six-hour trip. Both attend the pre-university course at Unesp in Rio Preto and dream of attending a public university. “We are unable to pay a monthly fee, and the quality is incomparable”, declares Lucas. Pedro Henrique didn't have many plans to go to university, much less an institution the size of Unicamp. “Now I see that it is possible.” Friends believe that the course opened their horizons. Both Lucas and Pedro always studied in public schools and did not know how to choose a course or institution. On his second visit to Unicamp, Lucas has more certainties than doubts. He wants to study Mechanical Engineering and being in contact with students to learn a little more about the course was very rewarding. Pedro doesn't really know what to study. His inclination is towards the Biological area. At Unicamp for the first time he was ecstatic with the organization of the University. “It’s all organized and separated by areas,” he defined. When asked if the trip was worth it, the two agreed: “We have the courage to drop everything and come here.”
“I didn’t think it would be that big”
Daniel Carlos Borges de Souza is in his second year of high school and had no idea that Unicamp was bigger than his hometown, Nova Granada (São Paulo). The municipality has 15 thousand inhabitants and the nearest university is in São José do Rio Preto. “Unicamp is huge. I didn’t think it would be that big”, says Daniel. He came for the first time with 36 other classmates from ColégioObjective. They left Nova Granada at 1:30 am and arrived around 9:30 am. The young student felt encouraged by the teachers to make the visit and did not expect to find so many new things. In addition to engineering courses, he also visited Medicine and Biology. However, the uncertainty persists. Daniel completed elementary school at a public school and had a different perception of a public university until he came into contact with the school's teachers. “I didn’t know that there was so much diversity and that several courses have a wide variety of possibilities”, he highlights.
Victor and Victoria
Victor Hugo Monteiro and Vitória Cistina da Silva Dias are from Americana. Although they are just a few kilometers from Unicamp, they were not familiar with the campus. They arrived early, at 9 am, disembarked with a group from the Olympia Barth Oliveira State School. They visited the Institute of Biology, the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Institute of Arts. A lot is left behind, but they want to come back another time. Victor's brother, Robson Monteiro, studies Linguistics at the University and even went on exchange to China. Therefore, the boy wants to follow his brother's example, but he wants something in the Exact Sciences area. Their families cannot afford a private university and it would be difficult to achieve their dream of pursuing higher education. They have already applied for the tuition fee exemption and are awaiting the results. “We know it is difficult, but we will persist”, they say.
Teaching Chemistry in Unicamp laboratories
Chemistry teacher Laine Godinho Garcia, from Escola El Shaday, in São Bernardo do Campo, took the opportunity to visit the laboratories of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FEQ) to encourage students in the subject a little more. Laine, in addition to the monitors' explanations, added several other lessons to the group of four students who accompanied her. “With the equipment and experiments, students have a greater understanding of the content”, explains the teacher. All students were visiting the University for the first time and were unanimous in saying that they really enjoyed the tour. “We had never seen a laboratory of this size up close and the experiments taking place were incredible”, says Maria Eduarda Carvalho Franco. Davi Augusto, Kássia Crescenzo Corrêa and Eduardo Augusto agreed that the chemistry class at Unicamp was worth it.
A discovery
Luíza Paiva De Angelis takes a pre-university course in São José dos Campos. She discovered her passion for the pharmaceutical profession in high school when taking classes with a professor who graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP). He was passionate about the course and managed to convey to her the advantages of becoming a professional in the field. The visit to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, however, enhanced her desire. The possible candidate for the Unicamp 2019 Entrance Exam found the Unicamp course broad and versatile. She believes the course will meet her expectations. “I didn’t know that there are several job opportunities for those studying Pharmacy.” But, Luíza wants to go further. Her goal is to do an exchange in Portugal and be able to work in research. “Unicamp would be ideal.”
