Unicamp professor Edson Tomaz was reinstated director of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FEQ) at Unicamp this Friday (18), during a formal session held in the college auditorium. He will be heading the unit for the 2018-2022 financial year, with professor Angela Maria Moraes as associate director.
The ceremony was presided over by the dean of Unicamp Marcelo Knobel and was attended by the general coordinator of the University Teresa Dib Zambon Atvars, the dean of University Development Marisa Beppu, the dean of undergraduate studies Eliana Amaral, the dean of research Munir Skaf, Chief of Staff Joaquim Bustorff and Deputy Chief of Staff Shirlei Pimentel, among other authorities. The event was attended by the university community.
Professor Edson Tomaz began his speech by saying that his inauguration was at least different, since he is the current director of FEQ and that he would be passing on the position to himself. He stated that the period he experienced was one of great learning and that the new period will have one of the challenges of dealing with the budget crisis. “Even so, we will seek to offer a college of excellence to our students and society”, he committed.
He emphasized that the greatest value of the FEQ is dialogue, to achieve a convergent result with long work, already started by the former directors who preceded him. “Our unit is among the smallest at Unicamp in terms of human resources, but it is among the largest in terms of production and recognition. We are among the top 100 chemical engineering colleges in the world,” he said.

Edson Tomaz stated that his unit's goals are to advance in internationalization, recover a grade 7 in postgraduate studies with Capes, reduce bureaucracy in the faculty and encourage computerization to face the reduction in the number of employees and teachers, which has been increasing with the passing of the years.
The second part of his speech involved many thanks to everyone who contributed to his management, especially Professor Marisa Beppu, whom he replaced, so that she could assume the position of head of the Pro-Rectory of University Development (PRDU); to staff, students and teachers; to the Rectory and the different bodies of the University.
In her speech, Marisa Beppu recalled that, in 2014, when taking office as director of FEQ, she said that the major issues in management would be inheriting the legacy left by her predecessors, without letting the college lose its identity. “We have always been avant-garde and amalgamated this experience,” she highlighted.
According to the dean, “the 2018 FEQ is very different in terms of composition and work processes compared to when we took over its direction, although its essence continues to be preserved. Here we see engagement and work. And we are very proud of this house.”
Marisa Beppu took the opportunity to praise the FEQ director for his unique administrative vision. She emphasized that “the idea is to now obtain national recognition, as this is already happening internationally”, she highlighted. “I had the immense honor of directing this college for three years.”
Speaking, the rector of Unicamp expressed his satisfaction at being able to induct Edson Tomaz, whom he refers to as a professor whose characteristic is the fact that he is a calm person. “With this characteristic, Professor Edson has the possibility of building an even better faculty during this administration and, with that, everyone wins.”

The dean also recognized the important work carried out by Marisa Beppu at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, as well as her effort to make the unit what it is at the moment. He ended his speech by thanking the work done so far and for the choice of Edson Tomaz, who will be decisive for the next four years. “Together we will do what we can to make Unicamp and FEQ grow”, he concluded.
QEF
In 1979, the first class of the undergraduate course in chemical engineering graduated. The master's degree began in 1980. In 1989, the proposal to create the FEQ was approved. In 2007, the postgraduate course reached the maximum grade in Capes' triennial assessment. In 2009, the unit was awarded the Inova Award as the unit that had the highest growth in the number of patent filings. In 2011, there was a departmental restructuring that reconfigured postgraduate studies and research at the unit. In 2012, FEQ was once again the unit that filed the most patents, among other relevant milestones.
