Unicamp's Central Administration received representatives from the Unicamp Workers' Union (STU) this Tuesday afternoon (19) for another round of negotiation on the agenda of specific demands for the University's technical-administrative employees. On that occasion, union members presented a letter containing six proposals approved by the category assembly: correction of food aid due to inflation in the 2014/2018 period; granting nutrition assistance to retirees; granting of meal vouchers; opening public competitions and improving working conditions, mainly in the health sector; granting a reference in the career table of employees and researchers, in order to change the floors of said careers, reaching active and retired people; and exemption from the discount for chartered transport.
Dean Marcelo Knobel assured union members that Unicamp is facing a series of budgetary crises, worsened by the low performance of the country's economy and the uncertainty of the political scenario. The director pointed out that the University is already working with a deficit of R$239 million for 2018, and that any increase in spending will make the institution's financial situation even more critical. Because of the current difficulties, added the rector, Unicamp is unable to go beyond the first proposal presented to the STU, to correct the food allowance from R$850 to R$950.
Marcelo Knobel once again told the union leaders that, although this type of negotiation brings out natural divergences between the parties involved, both have the same commitment, which is the defense of the University and free, quality public education. “Our accounts, as well as our decisions in managing the institution, are absolutely transparent. Everything is available for consultation by interested parties. Really, the financial situation of the University does not allow us to go beyond the original proposal,” he explained.
Responding to a request from the STU, the rector ordered the Economics and Planning Advisory (Aeplan) to carry out a new technical study to verify whether there is any budgetary margin that would allow resources to be allocated to meet workers' demands, as claimed by the Union. . Also as a demonstration of the willingness to maintain an open dialogue, Knobel informed that he will ask the University City Hall for data on chartered transport.
The general coordinator of the University, Teresa Atvars, who also participated in the meeting, also made herself available to union members to promote a meeting with health managers, to discuss issues relating to hiring employees and improving working conditions. She added that, even in the face of current financial difficulties, Unicamp has been promoting hiring, via public competition, to replenish the staff of units such as Hospital de Clínicas, Women's Hospital “Professor José Aristodemo Pinotti” (Caism), Hematology Center and Hemotherapy (Hemocentro), Center for Diagnosis of Diseases of the Digestive System (Gastrocentro) and Community Health Center (Cecom).
The STU also requested the scheduling of a new meeting to negotiate the specific agenda for next Monday afternoon (25). The rector had to consult his agenda to define the date of the meeting, but he added that he has every interest in receiving the STU and continuing to build an agreement with the Union that can put an end to the strike triggered by the University's workers.
