2017 History OlympiadThe states in the northeast region have the largest number of students and teachers who will participate in the final of the 10th National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB). The call took place on the afternoon of this Thursday (28) and will be held on the 18th and 19th of August, at Unicamp. In total, 311 teams were called up. Ceará is the state with the highest number of finalists (118 teams); followed by Rio Grande do Norte (46 teams); São Paulo (44 teams), Pernambuco (34) and Bahia (12 teams). Only the four northeastern states together account for 67% of the total number of finalists in the competition.

Another highlight is the state of São Paulo, which remains the third with the highest number of teams. This year, only Amapá left the competition and will not have any representatives in the final. The states of Amazonas, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Piauí, Paraná, Rondônia, Roraima, Sergipe and Tocantins continue with just one finalist team with the mission of winning a medal.

The Olympics began in May with the participation of 14,3 teams, a total of 57,5 registered from all Brazilian states. The 2018 edition reached its record number of participations, with 18% more teams than in the previous year.

For the ONHB coordinator, Cristina Meneguello, the project can contribute significantly to the learning of History in the classroom. “ONHB was designed to encourage the development of critical analysis and discussions on the most varied subjects. To this end, we offer information, texts, images and maps to be analyzed and researched to prepare answers,” she stated.

The teams are made up of a History teacher and three students. The competition is open to students in the 8th and 9th years of Elementary School and all years of High School – public or private schools. ONHB had six online phases, lasting one week each. Multiple choice questions and task completion were answered by participants through debate with colleagues, research in books, the internet and guidance from the teacher.

About the in-person final
The final of the 10th edition of ONHB will be held on August 18th and 19th, at Unicamp. On the first day (Saturday), the teams take the essay test in person during the morning, without the presence of the teacher and participate in a lecture given by a guest. The result is announced on Sunday morning in a festive ceremony where 15 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze medals are distributed, according to the score. The rest receive medals of honor for merit.
