The traffic lights on Rua Roxo Moreira in front of the Campus City Hall will start operating next week. The signage proved necessary due to the high traffic of vehicles and pedestrians during lunch hours, which was reflected in the traffic on some of the main access roads to the University. “We were looking for a solution that would allow traffic to flow and, at the same time, allow people to cross safely,” said the vice-mayor of Unicamp, Moacyr Trindade de Oliveira Andrade.
The traffic light will be activated by a button. This way, the flow of vehicles will only be interrupted when requested by the pedestrian. It is expected, in this way, that traffic will be regularized during peak hours and flow normally for the rest of the day. According to a study carried out by Empresa Municipal de Desenvolvimento de Campinas S/A (Emdec), responsible for the installation in partnership with the Campus City Hall, more than 600 people and 1.500 vehicles pass through the stretch, between 12:15 pm and 13:15 pm, daily.
“Emdec provided support from the beginning of the studies, during the purchase of materials, until implementation. This support was essential for carrying out the project”, highlighted Guilherme Ariolli Salustiano, responsible for the Transport Services Department (Unitransp) at Unicamp.
On the first day of operation of the traffic light, scheduled for next Wednesday (1), the Trauma League of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp will carry out an action at the site during peak hours, with the aim of raising awareness among cyclists and pedestrians to the importance of respecting the new signage. The University's Experience Department will also be involved in guiding people during the users' adaptation period.
