Teachers awarded the honor
The President of the Republic, Michel Temer, announced last Wednesday (1) a list of new members and recipients of the class promotion of the National Order of Scientific Merit. Among the recipients are several professors from Unicamp. The award of the badges and diploma should take place in October, on a date to be defined by Palácio do Planalto.

The National Order of Scientific Merit is an honor granted to Brazilian and foreign personalities, recognizing their contributions to the development of science in Brazil.

In February this year, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC) received nominations from candidates linked to scientific institutions. A technical committee formed by members of MCTIC, the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) evaluated the merit of the nominations. Unicamp teachers promoted for the Grand Cross Class

Biological Sciences

Anibal Eugênio Vercesi - In 1972, he graduated in Medicine at Unicamp and, in 1974 and at the same institution, he obtained a doctorate in biochemistry. Abroad, Aníbal carried out post-doctoral internships at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), United States, in two periods, between 1976 and 1977 and between 1979 and 1980. His research area covers the themes: metabolism, mitochondrial bioenergetics, ion homeostasis, oxidative stress in protozoa, fungi, plants and mammals.

Engineering Sciences

José Claudio Geromel - He graduated as an Electrical Engineer, specializing in Automation, at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Unicamp in 1975. He completed his master's program in Electrical Engineering in 1976 and obtained the title of Doctuer dÉtat in 1979 at the Paul Sabatier University – LAAS / CNRS, Toulouse, France. He obtained the title of Associate Professor in 1987 and has been, since 1990, full professor at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Unicamp. He supervised several research works through scientific initiation (11), master's (22) and doctoral (11) programs. In 1998 he became Pro-Rector of Postgraduate Studies at Unicamp and a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. In 2004 he published, through Editora Edgard Blucher, together with a colleague AGB Palhares from Unicamp, the book “Linear Analysis of Dynamic Systems: Theory, Practical Tests and Exercises.

Chemical Sciences

Laura Tatsuo Kubota - Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the State University of Londrina in 1985, Master's degree in Chemistry from the Unesp Chemistry Institute in 1988 and PhD in Sciences from Unicamp in 1993. He completed his post-doctorate at Lund University (Sweden) in 1997-98. Hired by Unicamp in 1994, as an assistant professor, he became a full professor in 2000, an associate professor in 2001 and, in 2009, a full professor. He was one of the pioneers in the use of silica gel modified with catalysts for the development of electrochemical sensors. He introduced new electrode modification strategies for the development of biosensors for clinical, environmental and food applications. He has published more than 220 articles in specialized journals with selective editorial policy, which have received more than 3.300 citations. He has authored/co-authored 22 patents. He participated in the development of 98 technological products. Oswaldo Luiz Alves - In 1973, he completed his bachelor's and degree courses in chemistry at Unicamp and, in 1977, he completed his doctorate in the same area and university. Between 1979-1981, she carried out a post-doctoral internship in France at the Infrared and Raman Spectrochemistry Laboratory, at the National Center for Scientific Research (LASIR-CNRS, for its French acronym). His research interests include: lamellar compounds, integrated chemical systems, nanocomposites, quantum-dots, inorganic nanotubes, metallic nanoparticles, special glasses for photonic devices, development of nanoecomaterials, in addition to the interaction of nanostructures with biosystems. He received several awards and titles, among which the following stand out: Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Merit (2002); Simão Mathias Medal (2004) and Technological Innovation Award (2008), both from the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ); and Scientist of the Year (2016), in the nanotechnology category, from the Nanocell Institute.

In the Commander class, the following teachers were admitted

Sara Teresinha Olalla Saad - Graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Jundiaí (1979), specialization in Medicine from USP (1983), Master's degree in Clinical Medicine from Unicamp (1987), Doctorate in Clinical Medicine from Unicamp (1989), Post-doctorate from Harvard University ( 1992), Post-doctorate at Elizabeth Hospital Of Boston (1991) and Post-doctorate at the Institut National de La Santé Er de La Recherche Médicale (1999). He is currently a full professor in the Hematology Department at Unicamp. His main interest is in the clinical and molecular investigation of chronic anemias, including hereditary anemias such as sickle cell disease, pyruvate kinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, spherocytosis and elliptocytosis, among others; and acquired anemias such as myelodysplasia, deficiency anemia and aplastic anemia. More recently, he is investigating the relationship between hematopoietic stem cells and bone marrow niches in animal models and humans and developing a line of research that investigates new genes related to cancer.
