Teams from 11 states won gold, silver and bronze medals in the grand final of 10th National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB) held this weekend (18th and 19th) at Unicamp, in Campinas-SP. The Northeast region was the one with the highest number of medals: 59 in total.
311 teams participated in the final, a total of 1,2 members. Except for Amapá, the final included representatives from all other states. In total, 75 medals were awarded, 15 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze. Ceará was the state with the most medalists (25), followed by Pernambuco (15), Rio Grande do Norte (13), São Paulo (10), and Bahia (4).
The ceremony was attended by authorities, families of finalists, historians of national relevance, as well as students and teachers who arrived in Campinas from the most diverse cities in the country. This year, ONHB had 57,5 thousand registered since the initial phase. The teams went through six stages of online tests lasting one week each. The final included an essay test on Saturday (18) and an awards ceremony this Sunday.
For ONHB coordinator, Cristina Meneguello, the 10th edition confirmed the success of the project, managing to attract new teachers and reaffirm the participation of those who traditionally are in the final. “We had some surprises in the medals and an interesting distribution across the states. Furthermore, the students brought relevant reflections on the themes proposed in the final essay, such as the composition of the National Congress and the importance of elections for the health of democracy. We are satisfied with a project that already has a structure and tends to grow more and more,” she said.
For the medal-winning students, the emotion and achievement were great. “We know what it’s like to get here, representing public schools. We are very emotional, because last year we didn't get a medal. So we promised to come back and we did. We are here representing public school students, because we know the difficulties they face”, said Everton Holanda, a student at the Liceu do Conjunto do Ceará school, in Fortaleza. The “O Bonde” team, with members from the 3rd year of high school, won a bronze medal.
Professor Blenda Cunha Moura, from the Federal Institute of Acre - Cruzeiro do Sul Campus, was the only one in the state to win a medal. She is a member of the “Jesus, Mary and Joseph” team and won silver. “I have participated since the first edition and I am passionate about this project. We started with ten teams, we went through many difficulties, such as lack of internet. This medal has a great weight for our state, which is very precarious in an educational sense.”
How the History Olympiad works
The National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB) is a project carried out by the History Department at Unicamp. Participation occurs through teams made up of a teacher and three students enrolled in the 8th and 9th years of elementary school and all years of high school. It consists of six phases of tests carried out online, lasting one week each. Multiple choice questions and task completion are answered by participants through debate, research in books, the internet and guidance from the teacher. The method, completely innovative, has as its main objective to encourage the development of critical analysis and discussions on the most varied subjects, through research and analysis of texts, images and maps. In this way, the ONHB consolidates itself as an important learning tool for teaching History. The project has support from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTic), CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and the Postgraduate Program in History at Unicamp.
